Governor releases Malheur occupation communications

More than 1,000 pages of emails and texts

The documents .. largely cover information previously made public or mundane matters, including press clippings, drafts of public statements, and discussions of the availability of hotel rooms and the dining options in Burns. However, some provide new insights into the issues under consideration as the nearly six-week occupation that ended Feb. 11 unfolded. The documents were requested by multiple news outlets, including The Bulletin.

Excerpts from the released records detailed herein are reproduced as written, and include a handful of spelling and punctuation errors.

In the early days of the occupation that began Jan. 2, much of the communication between officials concerned who should take the lead in communicating with media and the public. On Jan. 5, FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele wrote that Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward was “adamant” that he communicate with county citizens. Spokespeople with other law enforcement agencies had helped Ward create a video, she wrote, and the sheriff’s office had established new social media accounts ...
