Stunned bobcat stumbles across hunters and locks them in an epic staring contest before being allowed to flee unharmed

An epic minute-long staring contest then ensues, with neither prey or predator making a move before the bobcat finally trusted that he could turn his back

The blowing wind is the only sound between the two.
After one more look to the left and right, thinking hard about his next move, the bobcat takes a small step back in the incredible footage, posted by HECS Stealthscreen and captured by Switchback Outdoors.

The bobcat stumbled upon the two men, armed with rifles, on a walk
A minute-long staredown ensued, with neither making a sound or move
Bobcat then took a step back, but quickly turned his head to check on them
The hunters let him leave without firing a shot

Really a civilized encounter all around. I love the desert and miss it a lot, so I replayed just to look at that too.

Back here in Florida panthers, facing extinction, have been reintroduced far south of us and are still extremely rare, but one was spotted less than 20 miles from the wilderness surrounding our property, probably a bachelor. Gov. Scott Walker -- correction, Rick Scott -- isn't inclined to waste money on this stuff, but a lot of land around here is still being slowly purchased and protected as wilderness preserve, largely to protect the Floridan aquifer, so I always wonder when they might arrive here, not that we'd be likely to know if they had. We already keep our pets mostly inside because of the alligators.

It was pRick Scott that has decimated the DPR here in Florida.

I"m glad to see the legislature smacked his hands a little concerning the budget.

as I was driving through national forest here in NoGA. Beautiful animal, smaller than the one pictured here. I was under the impression that their habitat was forest, but I now know they are happy in semi-desert as well.

I am glad the hunters let him go...they were once almost decimated.

I think your cat gif in your signature line is so sweet. It is apparent s/he wants to be with you even when you are on the computer

...near Santa Barbara there's a mother living in a 10 acre non-developed park with a small lake. Our coastal area is backed by foothills, which is the chaparral area. They're very elusive, but a couple of local birders snapped a photo of the one near Lake Los Carneros and included it in their book.

Lots of critters we never think of are in the wildland-urban interface. Keep your pets in at night.

Just let the cat go about his business.

This is a BIG bobcat! I had several living on my place in Calif. They were half this size. You could tell when they'd been around marking things, but never had a problem with them. Once had two males fighting in the top of a big oak tree. Sounded like WWIII.

one morning recently. It was half the size of the one in your picture.

It ran off before she or her daughter could take a picture.

I'm glad the stand off in your op was a positive one. What memories those people have now.
