(154,021 posts)If you have some duck tape, you can use it to stick those without getting yourself cut further.

(15,480 posts)We've had some extraordinarily high winds in SW Pennsylvania - repeatedly blew covers off my outdoor furniture and into the neighbor's yard - that has never happened before. And driving across a local bridge, my car was - I don't even know the descriptive term to use - "shaking"? in the wind. Again, a first.
I'll be checking with my daughter in Oakland to make sure she's OK.
yuiyoshida
(41,831 posts)That was a heavy window frame, and glass...that could have kiled me with of those shards being the size of katana blades, and just as sharp.

(29,414 posts)Cleaning up glass is a pain. And, wear shoes for a while. Glass loves to bounce when it shatters. You might find shards in places you least expect (including other rooms!) Be wary of that for your cat, too.

(90,645 posts)I hate to say this, but you should probably throw out all the bedding, as there is no way at all to get the fine splinters out of the fabric, and they will be an ongoing danger to you.
Stay safe!

(15,480 posts)Or whatever kind of tape it is people use when hurricanes are forecast in their areas. Of course, that requires adequate advance warning. It wasn't some heavy object blown into your window and breaking it because you mentioned the screen was still intact.
This has made me think about how I'd respond. I'd close the cellular, insulating blinds I have on all the windows on the windward side of my house - think they'd absorb or deflect broken glass. (Now if I were a One Percenter, I'd have custom-made, shatter proof windows installed.)
Again, glad you were not injured!

(15,480 posts)In the South Pacific, for instance, the highest wind speeds ever measured came last month when Tropical Cyclone Winston crashed into Fiji. Entire villages were flattened. In financial terms, the storm wiped out ten percent of the nations gross domestic product, roughly equivalent to fifteen simultaneous Hurricane Katrinas.
This was followed by a few months of the highest wind speeds ever recorded in our hemisphere, when Patricia crashed into the Pacific coast of Mexico.

(23,338 posts)Being nearly killed in a storm, having to clean glass from everything, having to type about it with bleeding fingers, these are no excuses for bad grammar!
Kidding, hope this morning you are safe, with life getting back to normal, with your cat calming down. And I hope the hole where your window used to be is patched with something.
Good luck.

At my place, no winds, just light snow. Much calmer.

(16,199 posts)Normally windows can take winds over 130 MPH.
yuiyoshida
(41,831 posts)but Just one.. Wind gust shoved it inwards, the frame hitting a table, shattering glass everywhere.
NutmegYankee
(16,199 posts)Other than impact from a object, a window should withstand winds from a thunderstorm/gale, and normally a hurricane.
Was it the safety glass type that shatters into small shards? I still bear the scars from running into a real glass storm door as a little child.
yuiyoshida
(41,831 posts)From my slum lord? Please...I will be lucky if she even replaces it, or charges me for the damage.

(16,199 posts)Be careful! You may want to consider a lint roller for checking for the tiny shards.
I hope your landlord does a speedy repair at no cost.

(32,886 posts)During the winter, I use them over the three windows in my apartment that have air conditioners. Works reasonably well and is cheap.
edited to add: Stuff like this is available at your local hardware store too.
