U.S. women paid less in all industries, every level: report

NO it's not just "urban myth" as I was told by at least one jackass MRA type (not here on DU - IRL). And yes there are anecdotal examples of some women making more then men sometimes --but overall and in general, women make LESS. Sometimes MUCH less. Especially women of color. Add this up over a lifetime and we're talking many thousands of dollars that could help save for retirement, kids college, a home or home repair, etc. Retired women are among the poorest in the nation because they make less -- they get less in Soc Security when they retire and usually were able to save less when working. The universal message to women here is that "you are worth LESS" ie: worthless.

The United States is a bassackwards country in SO many ways and this is one of the oldest and most intractable ways. This should have been dealt with a LONG time ago via passage of the ERA and other legislation and enforcement should be frankly - vicious. Because it's not going to change otherwise and it MUST change. It becomes a HUMAN rights issue, otherwise.

"The gender pay gap is absolutely real," said Aubrey Bach, senior editorial manager of PayScale Inc., the online salary, benefits and compensation information company that compiled the report.

"Half or more of our workforce is made of women but we are still not progressing at the same level as men," she added.

While men's salaries kept increasing until the age of 50 to 55, reaching a median salary of $75,000, the report showed women's wages hit a plateau between 35 to 40 years old at about $49,000.

The gender pay gap widened further as the job level increased with male executives earning many times more than their female counterparts.

PayScale calculated the gender pay gap by analyzing data from a poll of 1.4 million full-time employees. It used an algorithm to estimate the controlled median pay for women by adjusting for factors such as experience, education, skills, company size and management responsibility and other factors.

1. Why aren't men demanding equal pay for their wives?

Their families lose money if the wives get paid less. Men might have to work longer hours to earn enough money to make up the difference just because women are being paid less. There's less money in the bank, and less money available to buy things and improve their standard of living. Women are the largest segment of workers so this is billions $$$ of lost income that keeps families from living a better life.
