Well, he's suing. When the story first was reported a few days back, several DU'ers predicted he would sue- good call.
"Le Cun is now suing plant operator Florida Power and Light, alleging negligence for inadequate safety precautions.
"Nothing is more important safety at our St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plants, which is a reason that we have a protective over the intake piping. The diver intentionally swam into one of the intake pipes after bypassing a piece of equipment to minimize the entry of objects," FPL said in a statement."

(18,868 posts)They said there was no warning signs out there at all. Just a buoy. They just went down to look around. The plant said there was a warning sign telling people to stay back at least 100 yards.

(12,618 posts)dangerous to public safety, there should be more of an effort made to keep them out than a sign and a buoy. I'm a big believer in the term "idiot proofing." You have to take into account that a certain percentage of the population is just really, really stupid and will do things that defy common sense.

(5,169 posts)And put up a teflon covered 20 foot high wall around the Grand Canyon.
Scuba diving, and indeed any kind of swimming, should be illegal until scientists perfect human gills to allow underwater breathing.
For sure, electricity has GOT to go. Look how many people a year die of electrocution.

(12,618 posts)Blocking access to the pipe should be quite enough.

(5,417 posts)The whole point of a pipe is to let water in. You can put netting on it, but the suction of the netting can keep you trapped againts the netting until you drown.

(12,618 posts)In fact, it's not even that difficult.

(16,199 posts)Debris can clog the cage and if a diver gets sucked against it, they may be pinned and drown.
Downtown Hound
(12,618 posts)And make the bars wide enough for debris to go though. Rather simple, actually.
