http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/peggy-noonan-gop-is-ending/article/2584965In her column Friday, Noonan said proof that the GOP is coming apart is evident by the rise of Donald Trump, his unorthodox conservatism and the party's elder statesmen's refusal to accept that he may become their presidential nominee....
Trump currently has by far the most delegates in the GOP primary. But his main rivals, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, with encouragement from the party's old guard, are pushing to deprive him of the number needed to lock up the nomination....
"If party forces succeed in finagling (Trump) out of the nomination, his supporters will bolt, which will break the party," Noonan said in her column. "And it's hard to see what kind of special sauce, what enduring loyalty would make them come back in the future."
From your lips to FSM's ear, Peggy!

(11 posts)Everyone can see the republican party implode, I never understood the middle class and poor right wing voters. This has been happening for a long time. A long time coming, but inevitable. Nobody can say they didn't do it to themselves, and it is about time!

Very little will be needed other than the possibility of a liberal woman, for example, being president.
Whether or not you or I believe Hillary is a liberal, and I believe she is on many important subjects, does not matter.
They do, they think she is a liberal commie pinko.
Peggy appears to be reaching out to those she indicts in hopes of reminding them exactly what is at stake.

(53,986 posts)The way she mimics thoughtfulness, what with her English major vocabulary, has always been to her good credit. I admire her wordsmithery. She's been able over the years to elevate and immortalize the language support some truly horrible public policy decisions. Girl's gotta earn a buck, so I begrudge no one for earning a living.
Now, on the other hand, she ain't too good on the facts. I still remember the time she went on John Stewart and praised Reagan for having had only "one scandal" during his tenure as president. Stewart's lame response was "Yeah, but it was a doozy!" No, the only doozy involved was Noonan's outright fib about the Reagan Admin's horribly corrupt record. It was the most scandal-ridden administration since Harding (only to be topped by the Dubya Bush Admin 12 years later).

Still, Noonan is a classy lady. I can only imagine how frightening it must be for her to see the eloquent mask of her conservative philosophy ripped away by the big orange cave man. Like waking up from a 10 year coma and realizing how bad your morning breath got after a decade without Colgate.

(58,785 posts)self deception (I imagine you didn't think you could!), and survival. The post-Reagan era, once he was safely voiceless, was the launching pad for a 20-year career as TV's official keeper of the flame. When that finally grew too old to market, her new schtick was a DC-insider representation of nationalistic Christian conservative values, (supposedly) elegantly understated white candle version. She explained God's will to us, demonstrated through W, the neocons, Rove.
Now, what? I literally haven't listened to her in a couple of years. Will the theme of a post-2016 GOP resurrection, perhaps a neo-reaganism version, be Noonan's own next rebirth? Or perhaps she will become the voice of the oppressed citizen against the power of a dangerously out of control government. Charles Koch would like that, I imagine.

(15,379 posts)Where she attempts to use her vast vocabulary to praise and give support to the Tea Party and the anger they brought to the discourse in hopes that it would shift the party further rightward and make it more ideologically pure. All these republicans are lamenting Donald Trump when it was them over the past 8 years calling for someone exactly like him.

(35,699 posts)Actually not hard to believe at all, Peggy. After all, what would it take for it to be better? Not much. A chastened Republican Party reeling from the loss of the Presidency and the Senate might actually decide once again that elections matter and they need to respect the will of the electorate. And that would be better than the head in the sand denial which has been a prominent feature of the Obama presidency.
