Why Ren and Stimpy was one of the greatest cartoon series ever

"Nerdwriter Evan Puschak put together a video about The Ren & Stimpy Show, a "seminal cartoon of the animation renaissance." When the psychotic chihuahua and imbecilic cat debuted in 1991, I couldn't believe how fantastically funny and weird it was. There was nothing else like it on TV at the time. Before Ren & Stimpy, television cartoons were awful. Show creator John Kricfalusi paved the way for all the great cartoon series we've seen since."

As a youngun who could have known all the adult jokes?

As any good cartoon show, they didn't take themselves too seriously.

But Ren and Stimpy also crossed that barrier.

there was such a person as Boris Godunov.

I immediately started catching every R&B rerun I could manage.

Pee-wee's Playhouse deserves a mention here, too. Only time I've ever seen an adult pick his nose on purpose on television.

Ren & Stimpy was genius, with spectacular animation at times, to boot. Pissed off all the right people.

I love the animation and cartoon industry (I went to university for 3D animation), and I totally admire the role Ren and Stimpy has played in it, I think John K brings a much-needed respect and discipline for old animation practices to the modern industry. I've given it a couple of tries because I really want to like it for those reasons. But I just can't get into the physical comedy, and that's a huge part of what makes this show.

I suspect Mr. Kricfalusi ate a good amount of acid in his day. Just a hunch.

Most of it was what was used in A Clockwork Orange; makes me wonder if there was a reason.

I was raised on old Bugs Bunny cartoons and Ren & Stimpy was such a welcome thing. Not as nicely animated, but as crazy and absurd as the old Looney Tunes and often brilliant.

It's weird to see Kricfalusi bumps on Adult Swim now - just makes me want more of his cartoons. They must be fairly new, since they include his drawings of current AS shows.

at least until they canned Kricfalusi. The show went totally down the drain at that point. At least we can always watch the classic eps ("Space Madness" being one of the best!)

But outside of "Happy Happy Joy Joy" and "Log," I hated that show.

HATED it, it was just so damn stupid.

I grew up with the inspired anarchy of Bugs, Daffy, etc.

Ren and Stimpy were simply stupid. TOO stupid.
