(14,061 posts)This only confirms to his base that everybody is out to shut him and his supporters down; that the protesters are bad people (or in his hip words, "bad dudes" ; that the press is not giving him and his supporters a fair shake; that its the haters and the outsiders who are coming in to disrupt his "good time fun love fests" with his supporters; and after weeks and months of giving a wink, a nod, and an outright endorsement to violence, and broadbrushing everyone who doesn't "look like us" as evil; and scheduling the event at a place that would not be especially welcoming to his message...
....so, as the outrage and anger among the base grows, he decides to do the "right thing" and cancel the rally, all out of a deep concern for the democratic process, the first amendment, and the safety of all concerned -- when he apparently was still on his plane and nowhere near the venue, knowing full well how his supporters would react to the cancellation.
Is this shameless political theater on the part of Trump? Abso-fucking-lutely! He is not stupid. He is a master manipulator. Tonight is EXACTLY what he's been aiming for for months, and look for more of the same as his backers remember Chicago and let it fuel their hate even more.
Rachel just nailed it: Skinhead tactics are now part of mainstream GOP politics.
