Paul Ryan for President?

Bob Schieffer, on the CBS morning show, heard from "his sources" that if the Republicans do end up with a brokered convention where there is no winner on first ballot, that Paul Ryan's name will then be suggested. The conversation then continued that his V.P. pick would be Kasich, but I am not sure whether this, too, was part of his info, or whether it was part of the discussion.

3. I don't think it matters who they nominate if it's not Trump.

If Trump goes to the convention with most delegates and they don't nominate him, he'll tear the party to pieces.

5. I would vote for Drumpf before Paul Ryan.

I don't think Drumpf actually has any core convictions. He's been a supporter of Democrats for so long, things like Medicare and Social Security are unlikely to change. And let's face it, he'll never lay one bring of his beautiful wall, his mass deportation plan is unworkable, unconstitutional and prohibitively expensive, and he the president, any president, has no say over Common Core and state education standards.

OTOH, Paul Ryan is certifiably evil. He cannot wait to shut down SS and hand it over to private banksters. He cannot wait to eliminate or privatize Medicare. He will give in to any crazy right-wing religious nut-job bill presented before him. I think he would be far more dangerous than Drumpf, at least from a policy standpoint. However, Drumpf will do serious harm to our nation's credibility; he'll be our Rob Ford, the laughingstock of governments everywhere. He's an idiot and a racist, but I don't believe he is evil, as is Paul Ryan.

That said, ain't no way I'm voting GOP anyway. Just a thought exercise.

6. But if it is Ryan, or even Cruz, the choice is getting very clear

Yes, I am concerned that some Democrats would vote for Trump. Too many voters like "celebrities" as we've seen with Reagan and with Arnold. They can hope that he would "pivot" to his old pro-choice stand, and that he did mention taxing the rich and having a health care "like Canada."

If the choice is Ryan vs. Clinton, or Cruz vs. Clinton I hope that most Democrats will realize the danger of staying at home.

The people I talk to genuinely seem to like his tough-guy tone, and think that it will translate into being a tough-guy president, as if that is automatically a good thing. As I stated, he's got no real core convictions other than making a deal, making a buck. If anything, he's tended to lean far more to the left than the right. Not so for Ryan or Cruz. Those two are fundamentalist loons. Not necessarily religious fundamentalist, as in Ryan's case. Ryan is a right-wing trickle-down fundamentalist.

I share your concern about Dems staying home, though. A lot of people are very tired of holding their nose when they cast their vote. I think a lot of young people, who are really energized this time because of Bernie, will just say "fuck it, what's the point?" if faced with voting for yet another old-school establishment member of the Oligarchy.

Fear Paul Ryan. Fear Eduardo Rafael Cruz. They're genuinely bad, bad men. Trump is just a clown.

8. If Trump enters the convention having won 30-35 states

after prevailing over a shrinking field of 17 contenders that left him with the most primary wins and delegates.... Well, I can only imagine what the response would be at the floor of the convention if and when when an establishment candidate is hand-picked by the good old boys of the GOP after a couple of ballots fall short of the requisite majority. The Trump (and likely Cruz) people would stage a full-blown riot if someone who never campaigned or garnered a single primary vote is selected in a brokered convention. Trump would become unhinged, and declare the proceedings as a sham that ignored the will of the voters. Party unity? A real pipe dream. Can anyone envision a Trump-Cruz third-party ticket under those circumstances?
