5 Cumberland County deputies disciplined in connection with Trump rally

http://www.wral.com/5-cumberland-county-deputies-disciplined-in-connection-with-trump-rally/15554135/

Cumberland County, N.C. — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said that five deputies have been disciplined in connection with the assault of Rakeem Jones at a Donald Trump rally in Fayetteville on March 9.

The sheriff’s office said the deputies witnessed the assault and did not take action. Three of the deputies were demoted and were also suspended without pay for five days. The other two were suspended without pay for three days. All five deputies face one year of probation.

In a statement, Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler said the deputies faced disciplinary action for "unsatisfactory performance and failing to discharge the duties and policies of the office of the sheriff."

"The actions of the deputies and their failures to act in situations such as that which occurred during the Trump rally at the Crown Coliseum have never been and will never be tolerated under the policies of this office," Butler said in a statement.

In my opinion, he incited the incident by flipping the bird to the crowd. Had he simply walked out, that never would have happened. That doesn't excuse the deputies non-actions, but personally, I wouldn't go to a klan rally, incite them, and expect to come out unscathed.

Elbowing someone in the face when you have not been physically threatened is not.

There is nothing criminal about flipping the bird. Civilly there is also no money damages you could sue someone for for flipping the bird. Assault and battery are criminal actions. Civilly, actual damages/ punitive damages/ and pain & suffering are on the table. You could also sue the Klan members under your scenario if anything happened.

Even private events. And actually yes, I have done exactly what you mention, and I came away unscathed. Until Trump, the Klan had pretty much been reduced to a fringe organization that was too cowed to do anything aggressive in public. Believe me, they get flipped off all the time at their rallies. They're used to it. Things might have been different for them in the 1920's. That time is long done for them.

But to address your point about whether or not I would expect otherwise is irrelevant. I've been to protests where the other side has come right up to us and protested in our crowd. Nobody did anything violent to them. Sure, we were annoyed, but there was no assault.

I expect adults to behave as such, which means you don't assault people that are already being escorted out, even if that person flips people off. To suggest that he was responsible for that redneck idiot not being able to control his temper is victim blaming and totally buying into the right wing bullshit defense about how it's all the protester's fault. No, it's the people that can't behave like adults and start throwing sucker punches fault.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

this ads absolutely nothing to the conversation
it's just a threat and a personal attack

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Wed Mar 16, 2016, 06:36 PM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Don't make it about the person, but the post. This does not lead to civility.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: no physical threats even witty ones
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: A hard one. I've been reading trumad's posts for years, and they have usually been reasonable, so I'm giving him/her the benefit of the doubt and interpreting it as "some behaviors make me want to do unacceptable things, but I prefer to abide by the social contract"
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: a poor attempt at humor or sarcasm - but not hideable
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Dear alerter, it is not a threat, it is an attempt to illustrate the point.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Dear Alerter...get a thicker skin.
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

As he was being escorted out, Trump said Rakeem Jones (the guy who got sucker-punched) should go home to his mother. Jones' mother died five years ago, and while Trump couldn't have known that, it didn't go down well with Jones, and prompted his reaction. It's still no reason for the cowboy-hatted coward to punch him.
