Tonight on Real Time, Bill Maher took aim at Donald Trumps favorite thing about himself: his humility (or lack thereof.)
Criticizing America for being the type of country where a football player can run the wrong way, score five goals for the opposing team, and still be a winner, Maher cautioned against telling kids (and adults!) that they are amazing all the time. To hammer home why thats such a bad idea, he played a montage of Trump announcing all the things he is the best at, including building walls and loving the Bible.
The New Rule for this evening, then, went like this:
Stop trying to pin the rise of Donald Trump on easy targets like racism, xenophobia, and fetal alcohol syndrome and put the blame where it belongs: on the self-esteem movement.
Another great line was, If theres anything scarier than Donald Trump thinking hes the most important person in the world is that in eight months, he could be.
What do you think?

(42,552 posts)The so-called self-esteem movement had nothing to do with it.

People who remained right leaning and ignorant enough to think Reagan was an AIDS hero would also not notice that the same groups who spent years protesting Reagan's genocide of neglect also regularly held actions against Donald Trump at the Trump Tower, for Donald was the symbol of government money going to the rich while those most in need got by with less and less.
Trump became my enemy in 1983, he was facing organized protests through out the 80's. Bill and Hillary went to social events with him, their daughters are friends. What does that say? It says something. You think he's just now a racist? Guess what? He's always been one.

His long-held beliefs mixed with some of the difficulties associated with getting older is a bad thing for anybody, but especially for anyone wanting to be president and in charge of making decisions that affect the whole world.

I really think it's time for Maher to retire. He's turned into a "get off my lawn" old man.

Most narcissists are raised by a parent with a personality disorder. Often the parent is a narcissist himself, who treats the child as if the child is worth nothing unless he is a perfect reflection of the parent's perfection.
The Drumpf's father was probably the one who taught him he had to be perfect, and he could never ever admit to anything short of perfection. This has nothing to do with real self-esteem. It's really the opposite. These people can't live with the idea that they have any flaw at all - or that their family members do. And they will slap down anyone who threatens that idea, including a family member who is perceived to have a flaw.
