(17,751 posts)I love the excitement when landing @ Jose Marti.
On commercial flights, when the plane lands there's always a cheers and someone always gives out a "Viva Cuba!".
On takeoffs, tears and subdued sobs... me included.

(39,313 posts)The crowds are probably lining the roadsides. However, security is mighty tight, we'll see.

(17,751 posts)Miami's intransigent exiles are melting down over it. Large group of crazies on Calle Ocho in front of the Versailles protesting the Obama love relationship with Raul & Fidel. lol
The baseball game O will be attending w/Raul seems to be galling them the most.

(39,313 posts)though Obama will meet with Elizardo Sanchez and a few others. The ones he didn't want to meet want press coverage though so it could get lively! (Paycheck..)

(39,313 posts)I have had to land at Terminal 2 on charter flights, it's not much more than a shack!
Mika
(17,751 posts)The small terminal shack is one of the things I love about it - its a truly Caribbean experience.
Yes, I was in Havana visiting relatives. Always hurts to leave. Always wonder why I return to Miami.
I'll be going back soon.

(39,313 posts)so reporters are not quite there yet.
I found out that the plane that did land was Airforce One, but there's an Airforce Two landing now.
Tomorrow should be a YUGE day for Obama in Cuba media coverge, it's a great junket for the press and Obama has an entourage of fifty or so politicians and CEOs of corporations with him.

(7,299 posts)Not only did Chris Cuomo not shut up for a few minutes as the President debarked Air Force One but, the guy actually sped up his cadence as if he was on speed. Cuomo is in total love with himself.
flamingdem
(39,313 posts)Not sure if that was his name but he was going on about his own mixed feelings. I'm tired of hearing it, they've gotten so much out of their Cuba hate, done now!
Or did you mean Chris Jansing, she was talking a mile a minute too.

(12,582 posts)"Air Force One" is the call sign for any USAF aircraft which is carrying POTUS. If he'd flown to Cuba in a C130 that aircraft's call sign would have been Air Force One.
"Air Force Two" is reserved for the V.P.
The other aircraft would use the call sign "SAM xxxxx", where xxxxx is the aircraft tail number. SAM is short hand for "Special Air Mission." When the modified 747 we associate with Air Force One (and Harrison Ford) is flying sans President, it's an SAM aircraft (28000 or 29000).
The first aircraft would have been carrying support personnel -- security, journalists, any number of the hundred or so people in the presidential entourage. It could also serve as a way to make sure everything is ready -- runway clear, air traffic control functioning appropriately, etc., especially going into a new destination like Cuba. Nothing is left to chance on a presidential visit.
As an aside, the President is followed by another modified 747 which acts as an airborne command post in case of war or national emergency. It's equipped with beaucoup communications equipment.
Here's what the White House website says about Air Force One.

(39,313 posts)Fascinating, thanks. I know that "The Beast" has been there for several days running around the streets getting ready to carry Obama. The police were taking selfies with it!
