Melissa Gilbert(D) Running for Congress in Michigan

Gilbert announced her candidacy last summer after she and her husband moved to a secluded country home in Brighton, Michigan. The state Democratic party cleared the field for Gilbert, making her only opponent first-term Republican Rep. Mike Bishop.

Tax issues

Following her announcement as a candidate for U.S. Representative from Michigan, a spokesperson for her opponent's campaign referred to Gilbert as "tax cheat". Gilbert currently owes $360,000 in back federal taxes and $112,000 in California state taxes.[22] Gilbert has stated the tax debt is an outgrowth of a stalled acting career, the economy, and divorce.[23] She has negotiated a repayment plan with the IRS.[22]
Health issues

Gilbert has battled alcoholism and drug abuse, which she wrote about in her 2009 autobiography.[24]

While playing the role of Laura Ingalls in the touring musical Little House on the Prairie, a visit to the doctor revealed that Gilbert had been working with a broken back for months. On July 22, 2010, Gilbert underwent surgery to replace a disc as well as fuse a vertebra in her lower spine. The surgery was described as a complete success.[25]

In January 2015, Gilbert decided to have her breast implants surgically removed for health reasons.

19. My grandmother's good friend adopted Melissa Gilbert.

While we were all from Michigan, her friend lived in California where Melissa was born. So glad she made a home in Brighton. It's beautiful there.

Nice of the party to "clear the field" for her. Very democratic to give primary voters NO choice.

Unfortunately this seems to be the selection method for candidates in our crazy democracy. Both parties want candidates who are

rich and/or famous.

"government of the people, by the people and for the people" is just an empty slogan.

22. I used to listen to The Mark and Lynda Podcast, (Mark of the past Mark and Brian show)

here in L.A. and she's friends with Mark and has called his show (now Mark in the Morning) several times. She sounds great...Very real and down to earth. I'm thrilled that she's running. I wish her all the best.
