Even if you have a job as an employee these days you are run like a horse non stop. Doing more with less people, resources and time the new age of employment is to be run relentlessly and endlessly until you are broken down or used up. Then it is out to the proverbial glue factory. You can take contract jobs or a series of make do jobs with scant pay and not benefits. You can also just drop out of the work force voluntarily or drop out because your body and mind is now disabled and broken.

And you can forget retirement at any age because your 402k is not adequate. Powers that be and billionaires want to take away your entitlements (earned benefits) just before you get them.

So it does not matter if you are supposedly gainfully employed, your days are numbered in the new economy where workers are commodities and have a date of obsolescence at an ever younger age.
