Wisconsin man sentenced to three years for threatening to kill Obama
A federal judge on Friday sentenced a Wisconsin man to three years in prison for threatening to kill U.S. President Barack Obama, court records showed.
Brian Dutcher, 55, of Tomah was also sentenced to three years of supervised release on the felony charge, according to the order of U.S. District Judge William Conley.
Conley also recommended that Dutcher receive a full mental health evaluation and treatment as necessary.

Prosecutors said Dutcher told a security guard at a public library on July 1, 2015, that he intended to fatally shoot President Obama, who was set to give a speech on the economy at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse the next day.

From the linked article:

That word "also" makes me think that his sentence is three years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release.
The judge's recommendation of a mental health evaluation is certainly spot on. Someone who seriously planned to kill the President wouldn't post on Facebook about it and then walk up to a security guard of all people and chat about the forthcoming assassination. I don't think Timothy McVeigh or the 9/11 hijackers did stuff like that.

(22,457 posts)4. I don't think he needed prison. We have enough people locked up. nt

(2,337 posts)5. I think the threat of prison is enough.
If he fucks up, sure, toss him in.
Until then, I see no need for imprisoning someone who never even had an actionable plan.

And 3 years is too short. Make it 10 years.
