Christians celebrate holy week

45 Hooded penitents from the Brotherhood of Jesus Lying hold candles whilst taking part in a procession during Holy Week celebrations in Zamora, Spain, on Thursday, March 24, 2016. Holy processions take place across Spain as Christians gather to celebrate the week leading up to Easter and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

1. Yeah I have seen this before.

A bit jarring because of what the hoods in the USA stood for.

3. Meh.

It doesn't take much effort to learn to treat symbols as symbols.

You see a symbol, the first response isn't, "This is what the symbol must mean, because that's what I've always thought it meant."

No, the first response becomes, "What's the context, and what meaning does the symbol have for those using it."

It's like those other symbols called "words" or "letters" or even, gee, "symbols."

4. You have to know that it symbolizes more than one thing in the first place.

in other words, I disagree with you. The first response is that the symbol means what you believe it to mean. Then you need to get the inkling that it might mean something different, as well. How do you get that inkling?

5. But no.......there are no attacks on Christianity on DU.

I often wonder if there's any room for me here anymore.

6. Where's the attack in the OP?

The OP is just about an gallery of religious people. Sure, many of us are shocked by white hoods that we've grown used to seeing on klansmen but the OP makes no link to hate. Those obviously are not klansmen. The link only shows pictures and makes no reference to hate groups.

You immediately played the persecuted victim card that so many Christians do where there is no real persecution.

8. Of course.......

........it would be considered entirely reasonable to post pictures of masked folks from the Middle East wearing suicide vests and brandishing AK47s with a headline reading "Muslims Celebrate Ramadan". No one would have any problem with that at all.

9. What in the world are you talking about?!

These are simply photos of a real religious procession. Sure, the outfits are freaky and look they are out of the middle ages, but is that the OP's fault? What "attack" are you seeing?

SMH.

10. It's a medieval penitent's dress

peculiar to Spain, IIRC.

ETA: you can see similar garb in 16th and 17th century Spanish paintings - not always white, though.
