What’s the Sentence for Being a White Man Found Building a Bomb to Blow Up a Mosque?

90 days.

William Celli, a 55-year-old man from California, will spend 90 days in jail after being caught in possession of an explosive device and threatening to kill Muslims. Celli took a plea deal that places him on probation for a further three years and bans him from operating an active Facebook profile.

Celli was arrested on Dec. 20, 2015 after yelling “I’m going to kill you all” outside the Islamic Society of West Contra Costa County in Richmond, California. Police later found and detonated an explosive device at Celli’s residence after receiving tips that he was constructing homemade explosives.

Celli had taken to social media in the past to express his admiration of Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump. “Donald trumps on again I’m happy leaders okay but this guys a great point man I’ll follow this MAN to the end of the world,” Celli wrote on Facebook in October.

90 days. Did I mention this individual is white?

If it was a Muslim planning on blowing up a church, I'm sure that person would have also only gotten 90 days.

He's clearly unhinged, but a photo of a pipe bomb that contained no actual explosives isn't exactly something that's going to "blow up a mosque".

The actual crime was making a criminal threat (exacerbated by whatever hate-crime boost they could get). 90 days on a plea deal doesn't seem out of the reasonable range.

Had there been actual explosives - it would be an entirely different conversation.

I can't speak to how things are now in Richmond, but I can say that when I was a prosecutor there, the Contra Costa DA's office was focused on taking cases to trial, not on settling. In fact, we would get in big trouble for settling a case on the day of trial. I suspect an offer like this would have needed approval from the top and it would not have been made unless the case had evidentiary problems. I'm guessing that they needed to prove intent and had a very weak case.
