German train operator introduces women-only carriages amid fears over 'migrant sex attacks'

A German train operator has announced it is introducing women and children-only train carriages amid fears over sex attacks in the country.

The Regiobahn line between Leipzig and Chemnitz will introduce the carriages to increase security for women.

The carriages will be next to the train conductor in a bid to make women feel more safe.

I'm very torn about this. Why should women have to self segregate in order to be safe?

and now all they can do is to introduce morally compromised policies as "harm reduction".

"In an ideal world this measure would be unnecessary, therefore we will not implement it" is not a sensible argument.

That said, I have no idea if the right answer to "Do..." is yes or no.

I have a better idea. How about arresting people who commit sexual assault, sending them to prison and deporting them after their release?

no brainer. Apparently not. I think Germany's heart was in the right place with the refugees and all the other immigrants but it's a disaster for anyone who is for open borders and unfettered immigration. Women should not have to self segregate to stay safe on their way to work or whatever.

But the railway has said the measure is not a direct reaction to the Cologne incidents but is about increasing security generally.

The idea of gender segregated carriages was suggested by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn last year as a measure to reduce sexual harassment on public transport.

He said: “Some women have raised with me that a solution to the rise in assault and harassment on public transport could be to introduce women-only carriages.

“I would consult with women and open it up to hear their views on whether women-only carriages would be welcome – and if piloting this at times and on modes of transport where harassment is reported most frequently would be of interest.”

The measure is also currently in place in countries such as Brazil, Mexico and Egypt.

Take a look at the headline. It carefully says "amid", not "because of". Then read the article. It's a cut 'n' shut, leading with "A German train operator has announced it is introducing women and children-only train carriages amid fears over sex attacks in the country," then halfway through, veering off to the paragraphs I quoted above. But hey, it and this post got clicks.

When Jeremy Corbyn suggested this measure in the UK last year, he got pasted in the media, not least by prominent figures in his own party who felt, like some who've posted on this thread, that it wasn't the correct remedy for what has been a long-standing problem way before any recent influx of immigrants.
