The Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn rail company says the segregated train cars are designed to make women traveling alone or with small children feel safe, according to Europe Online Magazine.
The carriages will be in service between Leipzig and Chemnitz, and boys up to the age of 10 will be allowed to ride.
Each train will have two women-only compartments "deliberately" located at the center of the train and close to the customer service compartment, MRB added.
On New Years Eve, police in Cologne received hundreds of reports of sexual assaults and robberies, sparking international uproar. Several witnesses described the assaults as being committed by men of "Arab or North African origin, bolstering anti-refugee sentiments in Europe as the region struggles to cope with an influx of migrants.

(3,263 posts)My mother was always laughing at guys bothering me and trying to hit up on me while traveling until some old geezer was bothering her and giving her unwanted attention and just would not stop trying . Then she stopped thinking it was funny
Would be nice to have those cars here

(111,174 posts)What they need to do is get those new refugee men into classes to teach them how to behave around western women, that just because a woman is wearing shorts on a hot day doesn't mean she's a whore and fair game. If they don't get through to them, there will be bloodshed as women start to arm themselves any way they can.
Then again, a lot of western men are no bargain when they're out in public, either.

Back when there was work for them, it wasn't quite as miserable for women and girls.

(11,791 posts)On the Mexico City metro. I take it daily when I'm there (usually 2-3 months a year). I will ride the men's' car if I'm with a friend.
Odd story, I was riding to the historic center of Mexico City last summer, during rush hour. Not one of my finer decisions. I got on the men's' car with my best friend (a man). We're both fluent in Spanish and from major metro areas (me from NYC area, he from Montreal). The car was positively packed and we missed our stop. I was getting anxious about the crowds...not about the men, per se, though I was in a skirt. We started chatting with folks, in Spanish, saying "yeah, we spend lots of time here, from major cities, blah blah blah." An older guy shouted "this young lady needs to get off at the next stop, let's let her out!"
No groping, no sexual comments. I did almost have a panic attack though.

(4,187 posts)This is a sad and dangerous trend. Pretty soon, any woman who is harassed will be blamed for not sitting in the segregated car. Any woman who is not in a female-only car will be seen as fair game.
If the Germans really cared about women's concerns, they would work to make the entire train a comfortable environment for women, not just a single car. They would educate men about treating women with respect, rather than tell women to limit their freedom of movement. This is like telling women that they shouldn't go out alone late at night. The fact that Japan does it should have raised red flags immediately.

(2,560 posts)I've always felt very safe in Germany riding the trains. In Munich and also Chemnitz and Leipzig, evan late at night. I haven't visited in over two years so I guess things have really changed.
I spent a week in Cologne three years ago and felt perfectly safe wondering around...so sad.
