The rhetoric of U.S. politics may besmirch how the rest of the world sees the country, President Obama told journalists on Monday.
"The No. 1 question I'm getting is, 'What is happening to America?'" he said at the Robin Toner Prize dinner, according to pool reports.
During the president's half-hour speech, he called on journalists to hold politicians accountable and to fact-check the things they say.
"If I say that the world is round and someone else says it's flat, that's worth reporting," he said. "But you might also want to report on a bunch of scientific evidence that shows the world is round."

(3,343 posts)the media... good luck with that... and sure Obama has benefitted as much from that as anyone...
I was in a barbershop in an upper-middle class neighbourhood of Dublin on Saturday, and heard a group of Irish guys talking about how much they like Trump, because of his stance on Muslims... Europe is kidding itself if it thinks Trump wouldn't be popular here... the main difference is that the hard right is still seen as a complete joke - and very dangerous - in Europe, but relative to those folks Trump is just a blabbermouth.

It's hard to believe a European could say that with a straight face.

(3,343 posts)I live here and have heard people saying nice things about Trump here, including in the media, for months... I don't mean he'd be the MOST popular, but as popular as Le Pen? Of course.
