Never saw the show, it was kind of before my time. But the song lingers on.
She was amazing in The Miracle Worker.

(16,260 posts)You don't just die from a ruptured intestine, the sepsis just indicates lack of treatment.
CTyankee
(63,891 posts)then I decided I'd get the surgery to prevent any future attacks because that kind of rupture CAN kill you. Unfortunately, I had a serious complication and wound up in the hospital for a couple of months, then home with a temporary colostomy whhch was finally reversed. The only good thing is that the surgeon said I'd never be fat because I lost too much of my digestive material ...

(23,720 posts)It's what happened to me. I ruptured my Sigmoid (whatever that is). Funny thing is when it happened, I was in no pain for the most part.

(66,293 posts)('sigmoid' means 'S-shaped') right before the rectum. Common presenting area for diverticulosis and diverticulitis.

(23,720 posts)Both of my sisters have had bouts of diverticulosis and went to hospital in pain where they were given antibiotics and a 3 day stay? Me, no pain and I'm ruptured.
Aristus
(66,293 posts)Diverticulosis is very often asymptomatic. Sometimes, it's diagnosed indirectly during evaluation for something else. Diverticulitis is almost always symptomatic (left lower quadrant pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, etc), but you must have been one of the unconventional cases.
notadmblnd
(23,720 posts)but I had none of the other symptoms, so yeah, I must just be weird.

(23,720 posts)I got a hella hernia now though. But that's from my ostomy incision. I told my PCP that as long as it doesn't hurt, I'm not going to get it repaired that mesh they use scares me.
CTyankee
(63,891 posts)you don't want to have to wear a binder to keep your hernia in...I went thru that and it was no fun....finally I was all done and had the surgery and it's done. Please consider it. I had to wear that damn binder every morning...now it's fine.
notadmblnd
(23,720 posts)and my uncle just died from complications (infection) from having his hernia repaired. Everything just snowballed after he had the surgery.
My mom just got her settlement from the class action lawsuit. Of course both of them are in their 70's and I'm a relatively young spring chicken at 57, so I guess I should talk to my surgeon about it.
I do use a compression device. Being female I guess it's easier for us? But I'm tired of being cut on. Three surgeries in a years time and I have one more to go. The thought of being laid up again for three months is just not something I want to deal with right now.

(23,720 posts)My grandmother also had the surgery I had back in the 70's.
CTyankee
(63,891 posts)I had it and when my doctor told me what the outcome could be if I had another attack I immediately got the surgery to prevent it.
Why didn't her doc giver her that information? Or did he and did she ignore it:
notadmblnd
(23,720 posts)and I'm told may never have it occur again. One of my sisters was told to avoid nuts and seeds, because they are what gets stuck and cause infection. Also, not everyone ruptures. But hell if you have no pain and no fever and think you're just having a bout of constipation-- you just might ignore it until it's too late. I almost did. If my son hadn't insisted on me going for treatment. I would have gone to sleep that night and died.

(63,891 posts)sounded bad to me and I didn't want anything like that to happen...geez, what a tragedy...easily avoidable....oy...

(14,164 posts)The Valley of the Dolls was my first real shocking film I watched that commented on the dangers of abusing prescription pills. I admit I began watching for the boobies, but it soon turned into a kind of horror movie. I was at such an age, and she did such a good acting job, that it was the first time I thought about the world outside my protected family circle.

(2,654 posts)Over the years, Hollywood had a habit of turning down proven actresses in favor of younger ones. Experiencing that cold-hearted show business mentality contributed to her depressed intervals.
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)It was really illuminating to me because I had no idea she had gone through so much pain in her life, and I agree Hollywood and the people who managed her career as a child treated her horribly.

(29,671 posts)That and the not-really-a-sequel Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, written by Roger Ebert. Both were sheer camp but one was truly over the top and the other was grade B. (Don't care, love them both.)
Now it's time for Neely to sparkle forever.
