The transgender bathroom bill in South Carolina is probably dead.

It couldn't even make it out of committee.
This occurred because of several factors. The business backlash witnessed in several states gave many people pause.

In addition, the state senator who introduced it has the IQ of a turnip and is disliked by many even in his own party. He is in a heated primary race and this was seen as a blatant attempt to pander for support. Why that is suddenly wrong I have no idea. It is an art form perfected by the GOP.

Nikki Haley would probably veto it but not because she has one ounce of empathy for LGBTs. Please don't give her credit. She wants a higher office and she carefully weighs which direction the wind is blowing. If she thought supporting it would further her aspirations, she'd push for it with all her might.

So we watch in wonder as SC seemingly does something more progressive than NC. The GOP here has too many factions and they all hate each other. Without that enmity, we would probably lead the race to the bottom.

But until it is a done deal, I won't celebrate. I have friends still there and they are concerned. However, if it fails in SC, it could augur a trend in other bills.

I appreciate getting info on SC because I spent so many years there and have many friends still there. I remember what it was like to run the student GLBT group and the challenges we faced, including trying to get SO added to the non-discrimination clause (didn't happen until after I left).

I am always leery when something this big is no longer "top story", because that is when the forces of evil come out to play, in the dark away from the media limelight.

I will be cautiously optimistic this will turn out to be a bust.

Bills like that never truly die. Some iteration of it may pop back up. I do think this particular version is gone.
Ever vigilant!

She's everything they want: southern, polite, intelligent, white/nonwhite (how she pulls that off is beyond me), and somewhat pretty. She's the whole package and I wouldn't be surprised to see her on the ticket under Trump's name.
