Pakistan Woman Beaten, Burned to Death for Refusing Proposal

By The Associated Press

ISLAMABAD — Jun 1, 2016, 11:59 AM ET

A Pakistani police official says a female teacher has died after being beaten and set on fire for refusing a marriage proposal from a man twice her age.

Mohammad Ali said Wednesday that the woman, who was around 19 years old, was attacked two days earlier near the hilltop town of Murree, just outside the capital, Islamabad.

He says that after being brought to a hospital in Islamabad, the woman told police that relatives of the school principal attacked her for refusing the proposal from his son.

Such attacks are not uncommon in Pakistan, where nearly 1,000 women are killed each year in so-called "honor killings" for allegedly violating conservative norms on love and marriage.

Is whether the murderers will be brought to justice.

The only way to end this horrible "tradition" is to start jailing the people who carry out the assaults.

Let's just say I'm not holding my breath.

Pfft.

There's no "Love" about any of this. It's allow about control and women as male service units and property.

Disgusting.

These women have no human rights. Because they're not considered human. In many parts of the world (to some extent even in the US), women aren't considered human. I think it's one of the biggest tragedies of the human race.

Until then, bluster and words of the few aren't really going to peg my care-o--meter to the extent of women's problems in the Muslim world. American hyperconservatives and their wills and wants are not a major concern for me. They are an exceedingly small minority, and they shrink by the day. For every bizarre thing they say/want, women gain two fold.

We have man-splaining, man-spreading, and sex-disproportionate representation in STEM degrees.

They have honour killings, acid attacks, facial disfigurement, arranged child marraige, stoning, and polygamy.

I don't think it's productive to conflate the severity of our issues with those of the middle east. We have our problems, but to conflate them with the seriousness of the women living in Islam's sphere of influence borders on insane.

The difference in the US and Pakistan is that they recently introduced a law that explicitly permits spousal abuse (though I'm pretty sure it's a one way street). Also, our society don't find it reasonable to either murder our daughters or marry them off to the rapists.

Pretty sure our laws have trended in womens' favor regarding those crimes in recent years. I could be wrong. We're so much like Pakistan I sometimes get our legal systems and societal norms confused.

I don't know how people can look at some countries that are entirely through the looking glass on such basic issues and immediately think "Not so different, you and I. "

I've lived and worked in the middle east/South Asia for a large portion of my adult life. I know these attitudes and problems aren't universal here, but I've seen enough to find the comparisons and conflating with the west to be laughable at the very best.

sick when people come on this board and insist that we are just as bad, while minimizing the barbarism toward women that goes on in Islamic societies. It's just vile.

It is murder of a human they consider worthless unless totally subservient to their male master. It disgusts me that people who allow this barbarism to continue are considered allies of ours.
