What is the consensus here on the protesters at the Trump rally in San Jose who, without provocation, isolated, attacked and beat some of those in attendance? I, myself, was appalled.

So it is what it is. That said, and I hate to need to keep pointing this out, what you saw is politics happening outside the two political parties. I actually get why people are acting this way, and do not justify it, but get it. Think Jews, 1932, Germany.

(21,738 posts)and undoubtedly at lot of violence. Trump would initiate martial law in less time that it would take people to say "WTF did we do?"

(162 posts)Trump is a complete and utter fool, and probably the least suitable presidential candidate we've had in my lifetime. But the man does have the right to organize rallies and speak his piece without people shouting him down and disrupting him. Many of our young people seem to misunderstand their free speech rights. They believe that they're entitled to shout down and disrupt anyone with whom they disagree. And this is why we are where we are today, with violence breaking out almost daily. I believe this all started with people trying to shut down Trump rallies, places where his supporters have gathered to hear the man speak. Trump, in turn, escalated this bad behavior by having disrupters forcible ejected, and applauding when protesters were roughed up while being escorted out.
Unless and until Trump starts to act like an adult and publicly denounce violent response to protests, this is going to keep on escalating until people start getting killed.
I very much fear that this summer will see some considerable violence, possibly even loss of life.
