7-year-old boy forgives dad who left him alone in mountain

HAKODATE, Hokkaido--A 7-year-old boy found alive near here on June 3 has accepted an apology from his father who left him alone in a mountain six days earlier to discipline him.

“I forgive you because you are kind,” Yamato Tanooka said to his father, 44-year-old Takayuki, at the Hakodate Municipal Hospital in Hakodate, southern Hokkaido, where the boy is hospitalized, the father told reporters on June 5.

Yamato is in the hospital recovering after being alone for six days without any food, the father added.

As for the routes he walked in the mountain, Yamato told Tanooka, “I don’t remember it well.”

Yamato, a second-year elementary school student of Hokuto, also in southern Hokkaido, was admitted to the hospital on the morning on June 3. Since the evening of the day, he has eaten all the meals provided by the hospital, including rice gruel.
