I also hate to boil down all of his stunningly brilliant strategies into one key aspect of one major battle—but most people regard the Battle of Cannae as the perfect more traditional battle strategy. The battle took place on an open plain, with neither side having a territorial advantage. The Roman army was far larger, far fresher, very professional–so all things being equal they should have won, but instead it turned into one of the most bloody and one sided slaughters of all time.
