Colorado College summit aims to prevent sexual assaults on campuses nationwide

Colorado College summit aims to prevent sexual assaults on campuses nationwide
-

A nonprofit organization called Jana's Campaign is shedding light on college violence across the U.S. by holding a summit at Colorado College. The summit includes improving campus safety, preventing and responding to sexual assaults, partner violence and stalking.

"Jana's Campaign is committed to helping make the world a safer place. We're really going to work together of the course of the next two days to learn best practices of what people are doing on their own campuses and learning from national experts," said Kelley Parker, executive director of Jana's Campaign. Nearly 100 colleges and universities had at least 10 reports of rape on their campus in 2014, according to the federal campus safety data.

This summit comes following the widely known sexual assault case at Stanford University where a former student and athlete was sentenced to 6 months in jail after being found guilty of 3 sexual assault counts in March. It's just one of many examples why organizers with Jana's Campaign thought it was crucial to hold a summit.

"It's something that's a sensitive subject and something that touches close to home for a lot of people. But, what we don't talk about a lot of times is how under reported it is. So, although we hear reports of these staggering statistics, unfortunately that's probably just the tip of the iceberg," said Parker.

The summit also includes screening the award-winning documentary "The Hunting Ground," which is based on rape crimes on college campuses across the U.S.
