THE WORLD-HERALD

In this 1946 photo, Gordie Howe holds the two birthday cakes presented him by young fans, with some Omaha Knights teammates also on hand. The teenager spent one minor league season in Omaha before embarking on his Hall of Fame NHL career in Detroit.

Gordie Howe was the epitome of what a superstar athlete should be like.

That’s how Omaha Hockey Hall of Fame president Gary Anderson recalled Mr. Hockey, who died Friday morning at age 88 but will be remembered as one of the greatest players in his game’s history.

Howe played in the National Hockey League and World Hockey Association from 1946-80, winning four Stanley Cup titles, the NHL scoring title six times and the league’s MVP award six times. He played one season, at age 17, with the Omaha Knights of the United States Hockey League in 1945-46.

Anderson, who wrote the book “Those Were the Knights: The History of Professional Hockey in Omaha,” met Mr. Hockey when Howe’s Detroit Red Wings came to town for an exhibition game in February 1961. He was 14 at the time and approached Howe and teammate Marcel Pronovost on the bench.

Still have some of my Eaton's Trueline Gordie Howe hockey equipment from the 1960's, poor Gordie would have to sit in the sports dept and sign cards for us kiddies, different world for professional players back then, many had summer jobs to get by.
