(23,367 posts)I understand "October surprise" to mean "In American political jargon, an October surprise is a news event deliberately created or timed (or sometimes occurring spontaneously) to influence the outcome of an election, particularly one for the U.S. presidency."
Do you think that is what occurred?
Southerncomfy
(117 posts)sway the political discourse in some direction or the other.
In this case, I suspect the anti-Islam angle will play more than equality or gun control. As an example, Peter King is on here bloviating on all things Islam...
David__77
(23,367 posts)And I can envision that the issue of Islam will gain a lot of prominence.
I am hopeful that politicians will fully acknowledge what occurred and the role of ideology and organizations in this action.

(53 posts)Why block a bill that stops people under suspicion of extremist activity from having access to firearms? What law-abiding gun owner does that hurt?
They need to have part-ownership of this one thrust upon them ASAP.

(53 posts)inclusion on the no-fly list cannot be stopped from buying guns? For the sake of consistency, do you think no-fly lists should be scrapped too?
linuxman
(2,337 posts)If someone is too dangerous to fly, why aren't they under arrest or at least charged?
If they aren't dangerous enough to be detained, why should they nor be allowed to move freely?
You shouldn't be able to abridge a person's rights without due process by placing them on a list that can be added to effortlessly, yet near impossible to remove yourself from.
It's Bushco. bullshit.
leveymg
(36,418 posts)That's why you can't lock everyone up on mere suspicion, but can create a No-Fly list on suspicion. To those who read 2A the wrong way, that also extends to the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. It's a bad dilemma, I agree.

Of course, as a senator, one phone call got him off the list. I'm sure if it was me or you placed on the list in error it would not be so easy to get it fixed.

(53 posts)ultimately, he was an extremist who purchased guns without a problem. Yet unlike this freak, he wasn't investigated. Common sense legislation after him, after San Bernardinho could have reduced the likelihood of this and future instances.
Of course, it might be that you're right. It might be that Trump & co receive a big boost from that angle and it might be necessary for Democrats to pivot to the right on Muslims in particular to avoid catastrophe in November, but I hope not.

(14,915 posts)home brewed jihadists that it's not all that difficult to inflect mass casualties with just a gun. i think its a problem because it speaks to the state of the world. There are a lot of problems today that most weren't thinking about yesterday.

(23,367 posts)My boyfriend and I were just discussing how we had both thought, prior to this event, about how at attack on a gay bar here in our city could occur. I specifically thought that it wouldn't be so difficult.

What a coincidence! But we have been assured by at least one prominent DUer that religion has nothing to do with this.

I'd even like to see CNN's report established..
Up until CNN there was nothing itimating that Islam had anything to do with the shooting

Few reports of his religion having anything to do with his hate crime and Dylann Roof was a devout Christian and few reports of his religion having to do with his hate crime too.
