People are allowed to identify how they want to identify.

Yes, I think that people don't choose their sexuality, but they do choose how they want to be identified, and that was his ultimate choice. People have agency. He chose NOT to be aligned with the LGBT community, and to label him as a self-hating closet case is another form of bigotry against the LGBT community, that they are somehow "broken" and prone to violence.

1. There was an interview on MSNBC last night that I thought put this

in a good way. Chris Hayes interviewed a black women who runs an LGBT organization in Florida. She said that people are brought up or have been brought up to believe that gay people should not exist. And this results in hateful thinking. Whether that thinking is externalized or internalized makes little difference as it is the result of what people have been told from very early in their life. (that is my best paraphrasing from memory, I will look for the clip.)
