General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsCan anyone provide any sort of reason why I should give a shit if people can no longer buy AR-15s?
I'm told that prohibiting their sale is some sort of gross infringement of people's natural rights, and I'm sorry but I cannot care any less if people are cut-off.
All I know is post-Sandy Hook, there were large amount of people whose very first reaction was to run to the gun stores and gun shows to buy up more AR-15s because there was a chance they could stop selling them.
And that's about the most ass-backwards reaction to 27 people being shot dead that I can ever imagine.
I'm sorry, but I will not cry a single tear if AR-15s are no longer sold to the general public.

(2,493 posts)If Congress enacts some sort of ban that withstands constitutional scrutiny then great.

(17,064 posts)They are involved in a very low % of gun deaths, even though the ones they're involved with are high profile. Mass shooters will simply use other weapons...for example, until Orlando the most deadly mass shooting was Va Tech, using two handguns.
OTOH, AR-15s are poor hunting rifles, and not the most effective for home defense.
In short, banning them will delude a segment of the population into thinking they've won a victory, but in reality nothing will have changed. The effort and political capital could be more effectively spent...but most likely that isn't the objective.

(34,169 posts)I won't argue much except to say I disagree because people decide to massacre with the weapons they have and not the ones they wised they had and the second most deadly shooting was done with two handguns with only 10 and 15 round magazines.
Its been a somber month or so for me. Watching the Bernie campaign not succeed, can't get happy about HRC being the 1st female Democratic candidate and likely president even though I know I want to be, losing faith in the party, coming to terms about my own shortcomings as revealed through this primary, unhappy with hosting, 3 weeks in bed due to back pain, and now this horrible massacre. A pessimistic feeling of futility has permeated my life.
Thank you for asking. I'm sure I'll feel better in while.

They aren't going anywhere.

(17,064 posts)Doesn't sound like they're selling at all now. And the figure is about 1% of all guns (or less) in the publics hands.

(56,582 posts)I think the problem is that if you prevent people from buying the AR-15 then tomorrow the manufacturer markets the BS-16 which is totally different, bro except it looks and functions exactly the same.
So, frustrated with that, you might go after the particular form factor (this is the theory behind the assault weapons ban) and so the manufacturer tomorrow markets an identically-functioning rifle with a modified grip and no bayonet lug (at least we will have prevented more bayonet attacks?)
What nobody's tried yet (and what I support) is actually outlawing the mechanism. The political problem being that Wayne la Pierre then holds up your grandfather's hunting rifle (which works exactly the same way as an AR-15 inside) and says "scary liberals are trying to ban this".

(56,582 posts)But a wood-finished, traditional-grip rifle (probably with the magazine removed for the press conference) that looks exactly like what people think of as the kind of gun grandfathers "should be" allowed to have.

(17,064 posts)It's like trying to eliminate drunk driving by banning cars with mag wheels. Completely illogical, but then they're deal from an emotional position, not a logical and practical one.
Actually, the easiest solution is not to ban AR-15 type weapons at all, just require that all in existence must be painted pink. The macho idiots who buy them because they looked 'cool' will be forced to get rid of them.
ManiacJoe
(10,136 posts)Pink won't work since you can get the plastic part parts in any aftermarket color you want.
However, it is cool to see all the multiple neon colors in the AR-15 racks at the national competitions.

(1,327 posts)the crazies will have them and already have them most of these gun lovers have a store in their house,an armory,or their own homemade museum filled with guns.
These people will die hugging their guns they know damn well no one is coming for their guns and republiCONS use it as a talking point or to make money for their fake organizations.
Does anyone really, think that all guns will be taken? I hear some of the stupidest arguments.

(688 posts)the compliance rate would be 50% at best (possibly much lower), leaving hundreds of millions of guns still in circulation.

First you admit it was a reaction to potential bans, then you said it was a reaction to 27 people being shot.
It was one, but not the other.
