may have led Mateen to act as he did.
excerpts from article:
Mateens ideological evolution takes us well beyond the banal idea that this was "just another" IS-inspired atrocity.
before his G4S stint, Mateen was not a homophobe.
Ten years ago, according to a former high school friend Samuel King, Mateen didnt have an issue with the LGBT community.
According to Mateens ex-wife, Sitora Yusufiy, Mateen became increasingly abusive after they were married in April 2009 two years after he joined G4S: He would just come home and start beating me up because the laundry wasnt finished or something like that.
The problem is that G4Ss approach to domestic security in the US homeland amounts to a hotbed of routine abuse, sexual violence, extremism and homophobia, tolerated at the highest levels of G4Ss management.
Last October, four G4S security officers filed a religious discrimination lawsuit against the Florida-based firm for firing them when they complained about the extremist, homophobic bigotry of their senior G4S supervisor.
The lawsuit, which demands $3.5 million in damages, says that a G4S kiosk where the guards worked at a shopping centre was managed by a devoutly Christian supervisor who told employees their gay family members were going to hell, played videos about the Illuminati and warned that the security kiosk could be attacked by demons, according to a local Portland publication.
The supervisor would post Bible verses on the walls and hold daily "prayer circles" with two other guards as part of a campaign of fervent evangelising, according to the court filings.
The FBI had already interviewed Mateen in 2013 and 2014, and even placed him temporarily on a terror watch list, after he had told co-workers about his sympathies with militant or terrorist groups that the agency has not identified publicly.
So around this period, Mateen had suddenly begun to display an increased interest in a belligerent Islamist extremist ideology. By the time he met Gilroy, he had begun praying regularly, bringing his prayer mat to work. But even Gilroy observed that Mateens ritualistic religiosity was completely at odds with his behaviour he would frequently rail against black people, display sexual interest in random women, and openly talk about wanting to kill people.
G4S has not yet provided any clarity as to why it failed to act on these repeated complaints which, at the very least, should have entailed an internal investigation into Mateens professional conduct.
It seems difficult to avoid the conclusion, though, that G4S superiors simply did not see Mateens sociopathic tendencies as a problem. In much the same way that G4S management decided to protect an extremist Christian homophobic supervisor in Portland, they preferred not to reign in Mateens openly homicidal extremism.
G4Ss routine protection of violent, racist tendencies among its security officers appears to be an institutionalised global problem for the government contractor.
Over the last decade, the firm has been beset by scandal after scandal due to allegations and findings of systematic tolerance of astonishing abuse.
Indeed, according to a report by the American Friends Services Committee: In Florida there have been consistent reports of sexual abuse, use of excessive force, recurring riots, and numerous resulting lawsuits against the company.
In Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa, among other countries where G4S has security contracts, official complaints under OECD guidelines documented disturbing testimonies of racial segregation and poverty wages discriminating against black workers under the company's management.
G4S employees in Britain have been found to routinely engage in racist, misogynist and homophobic banter, and the firms child services systematically subjected children to physical abuse often resulting in life-threatening harm.
Despite repeatedly voicing to his G4S colleagues his desire to kill people, his sympathy for terrorists, along with racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic views, G4S superiors opted to keep Mateen armed, dangerous and on the payroll.

(45,319 posts)It's amazing to me that the same people who cite 'a high school friend' as Gospel testimony when they claim he was not homophobic (all HS boys discuss their embrace of LGBT of course) but when one of them says Mateen cheered for 9-11 that 'testimony' is instantly rejected. It is called editing for narrative and it's a form of storytelling.

(375 posts).......In 2002, G4S acquired the United States-based Wackenhut Corporation, a private security and prison contractor with a deeply troubled history, including the widespread sexual assault of inmates at a Texas detention center in 1999.
Wackenhut went on to win a contract to guard the U.S. Embassy at Kabul, worth $189 million over five years. In 2009, the Project on Government Oversight sent a letter to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with photographic evidence that embassy guards had created a Lord of the Flies environment, at the embassy, said to include guards and supervisors peeing on people, eating potato chips out of [buttock] cracks, vodka shots out of [buttock] cracks
[drunken] brawls, threats and intimidation from those leaders participating in this activity.
Nevertheless, Wackenhut was hired by the U.S. government and BP in 2010 to manage perimeter security for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the Gulf Coast.......

(58,724 posts)This assertion, stated as a fact in this article, is based on a Facebook post from a guy who worked at a mall at the same time that the killer worked at a different store in the same mall.
It's amazing how people will believe whatever suits their particular narrative.

(3,864 posts)Mateen was friends with King despite him being a gay drag queen, and would visit the restaurant where they worked and laugh with us. He mightve even sat down at the bar and had a drink and laughed with the bartenders, knowing that they were lesbians.
King last saw Mateen in 2009. So what changed since then?
admittedly we are all speculating, but not you -- oh no, you have the facts. LOL.

(58,724 posts)Samuel King is the person who made the Facebook post.
He worked at Ruby Tuesday at the mall where the killer worked at GNC.
They were not high school friends.
King made this Facebook post:
I cant believe i knew this dude
. He worked at GNC at the treasure coast mall when i was at Ruby Tuesdays and he Graduated from the same high school in 2004"
After that he got contacted by a bunch of media outlets and shared similar quotes to the one you cited about him coming into the restaurant sometimes and seeming amiable.
If you read the rest of King's Facebook wall, you will see that he barely knew the person, was not even sure they want to the same high school until checking a yearbook, and received responses from others who did remember him from high school and describe him in completely different terms.
King responds to one poster in particular who painted the killer as a violent, nasty person when they were in high school together. This person rode the bus with him every day, he said. King's response was that the killer seemed friendly when he came into the Ruby Tuesday's at the mall, and he hadn't seen that side of him.
If you are genuinely interested in learning the facts, do a little research of your own, and don't take everything at face value.

(45,319 posts)Is that also Gospel level truth? Anything a high school 'friend' says is fact? So Mateen did cheer for 9-11? Because that's what was said. By a 'friend'.

(3,864 posts)is it so impossible that his peers and management and the work environment slanted his views???
Really, some people at du CLEARLY post in order to make trouble, and miss the main point, AND do not bother to read what they are posting about.
all they do is bla bla bla
makes it hard... no, impossible... to have an intelligent conversation.

(58,724 posts)My only contention is that the author of the article unreasonably concludes that the killer was not a homophobe prior to working at this company based solely on the comments of one individual who worked at a Ruby Tuesday's in a mall where the killer worked at a GNC.
There are other comments from other people who also knew the killer that paint a different picture of him as a young man.
The information presented by this one person is not sufficient to conclude that the killer was definitely not homophobic prior to working at this company.

(45,319 posts)His father, the man who raised him, Tweeted this on Monday after the mass murder: ""God will punish those involved in homosexuality."
So perhaps the hateful bigot sought out like minded hateful bigots to employ him? His father saw fit to tweet that on Monday, with 49 funerals being planned. But you claim the anti gay sentiments came only from his workplace?

(3,864 posts)he should just shut the f up.
Do the survivors and families really want to hear this guy try to distance himself and save his ass?
He wants to try to make sure he doesn't end up fbi prey.
now they say that in 4th grade he (the shooter) talked about bringing a gun to school and shooting people.
definitely warped from an early age.
wonder what his childhood was like.
take a warped mind add jihadist videos add a brutal homophobic environment add easy access to guns.
There you have it. certainly not the last.

That said there are way too many LGBTQ Christian haters spewing hate and threatening lives 24/7 in the USA.
