but this article is bullshit.

"For every 1,000 residents in Michigan, there are 4.3 guns. That's 42,855 registered firearms dispersed among 9,895,622 people."

What is a registered firearm in Michigan? There is not registration required unless it's full auto or some other weapon restricted under the NFA. There are a fuck of a lot more firearms in Michigan then 42,855. There are 650,000 deer hunters alone and they are not using sling shots. There are probably 42,000 weapons in Detroit alone, let alone the rest of the state. I bet it's closer to 5 million long guns in Michigan and another 3 million or so pistols.

The database the author used is for class III weapons, which are machine guns, short barreled rifles, etc. which require an extensive background check and a $200 tax stamp to own and which cost a minimum of $5K going up to around $25K and higher.

and the way they go from a reasonable set of terms on slide 1 to the generic "guns" (which has a different meaning for most readers) ....

No, they're not surprising. Annoying, irritating, misleading, confusing ... They are many things. But not surprising, astonishing. The site smacks gobs only through the sheer inanity of the process and audacity of daring to mislead readers.

The AR-15 used in Orlando wouldn't be registered any more than the Winchester .22 that we used at Boy Scout camp. Pistols and revolvers aren't included. Shotguns for hunting aren't included.

The three most common forms of firearms ... Not included.

But hey, if you want some kinds of bombs (called by this site "guns" ... who knew?), there are your numbers.

and for instance NY statewide only does handguns and assault weapons (and only like 5% of those)

Big fail.

ETA: While this list is lengthy, it does not include categories like pistols, which make up a large percentage of the guns in the U.S.

Holy shit - worse then I 1st thought.

ordinary hunting, target, and recreational rifles and shotguns. IOW, almost all of the guns in America.

This article is very misleading. The list they are using is the list of registered class III weapons, such as machine guns and sawed off shotguns. Very expensive and very difficult to obtain, and almost impossible in some states. Yet, they just call them "guns."

I was surprised to see us ranked that low. I'm guessing the densely populated cities offset the rural gunners significantly.

10. if you read the methodology
Fri Jun 17, 2016, 09:46 AM
Jun 2016

you'd see that this is one useless article.

As America reels from yet another mass shooting, inevitable questions resurface about guns laws and the nation's pervasive firearm culture. Here is a look at per capita weapons data, based on the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, and 2013 data from the U.S. Census.

While the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record is the only accessible list of its kind, it is not all-inclusive. NFA firearms only include the categories regulated by The National Firearms Act of 1934: machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices like bombs and grenades, concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use.

so, in essence, this record does not include "regular" firearms...so, in other words, this article is bullshit.
