Yesterday, I listened to a full Trump rally address from the 17th and I heard slip in (amid the primaries, Crooked Hillary's, walls, second amendments, "Get him outta here's," etc.) the phrase "If this doesn't work out."
Both times there was a context: Something like "This is a movement. If this doesn't work out (gesturing outward with his hands), we'll know we really did something."
Which means, he's been thinking about it.
That's the only sure conclusion. But, it doesn't take much speculation to think he is resigned to losing. (That phrase, in his address, seems happy, if not gleeful. Of course, he's a con-man.)
Another speculative step: He's resigned to losing because he doesn't want to win.
Maybe he never wanted to win.
Maybe he wanted to win but as it came closer to becoming possible, he decided to "blow it" by ignoring Republican Party advice, continually shooting himself in the foot, rallying in red states, insulting Party leaders, etc.
Maybe his desires have varied over the months, but now it seems he's scared he might win so he may be trying to implode.
And each night around a golden fireplace with its faux-flame, his advisors and his kids, he says over and over: "Look what we did. Wow! If this doesn't work out . . ."

A fairly high-level strategist is on the record saying that Trump never intended to win, but intended to come in second as a way of building his brand. Oops. And when you think about it, actually running is a disaster for him, both because of the cost and because all his multifaceted grifting is now squarely in the sights of the Clinton/Obama campaign machine -- quite possibly the best-funded, most data and tech savvy such campaign ever, likely to be a veritable T-1000 of relentlessness when it comes to deploying oppo research. Plus his strategy -- free media coverage instead of a traditional campaign -- is (finally) starting to backfire; unfortunately he is by all accounts lazy, and running in a traditional campaign is hard work. I wouldn't want to be him.

(58,785 posts)very interesting, thanks. I'm sure tRump's background couldn't even stand up to my grandson's battery-powered T-Rex even if tRump himself "will not stop," "he doesn't feel pity," "he cannot be reasoned with."
I'd read that article, and it is interesting from someone who's been there, but the takeaway of someone who ever imagined Trump could be "the real deal"...! Generally speaking, I discounted by half and then took another 30% off.

(260 posts)This is the very first job he's ever had to interview for and when he 'loses' it will be to a woman - I don't think he will be able to take it.
This of course makes him even more dangerous, as he is literally 'running' for his life and if he does end up being the nominee coming out of Cleveland (which I think he will), his campaign will be historically negative and dirty.

Now whatever he does he looks like an idiot.
What's he got left to sell to his idiot fans?

How does he monetize not becoming President?

(7,810 posts)pick the new nominee)...or....he quits and sues the daylights out of the RNC for not supporting him and damaging his brand. The former would be hundreds of millions, the later billions.
Either way he avoids losing, gets over on everybody, and makes money. What else does he care more about?
I bet he always, always has an angle. This might have been the angle from the beginning.

(53,410 posts)The system is rigged against us will be his motto when he loses.
Forgotten will be his words about not liking losers. He isn't a loser. He's a victim just like his base.

gotta blame it on the Republican establishment
trump comes out ~okay~, but his "base" of racists and xenophobes won't be so eager to come running back to tow the line for whatever prick the GOP puts up to lose the election this year. trump goes off to found some ill-conceived media biz, the GOP slinks away to lick its wounds for a year or two...

(16,254 posts)Look at how many times he's quit on projects, walked away from the responsibility of paying his bills, filed bankruptcy, failed in marriages, gone back on his word and made an ass of himself in public.
He has not only damaged himself even more, but he has damaged our image in the world. How could one incompetent candidate draw that large a following for this long? How dumbed-down can one country be? We are the laughing stock of the world, at this point in time. This election has been a clown show from the get-go and Trump is the clown left standing.
All we can hope for is that Trump will dilly-dally around before he announces he's going to take his ball and go home and that when he leaves, the Republican party is in shambles and doesn't have time to recover. I would guess Romney will step forward to save the day (and, give Queen Ann an opportunity to wear her inaugural gown). His water boy is warming up in the wings, I hear.
Not sure I can go much longer on this diet of popcorn. Can we switch to ice cream?
