Thomas Frank's "Listen, Liberals" talks about this quite a lot. He said in his Democracy Now interview yesterday that the party chose to do this, especially after the collapse of communism and socialism meant that liberals had no where else to go. I have not yet read the book, but I'm dying for a place to talk about these issues openly (Twitter, maybe? I have a hard time wading through all the chaff there, though).
