"I was signing my slip," Arnold told CNN affiliate WJAR. "I didn't really pay attention to it yet, and then I just happened to read it and I saw it in the corner and I was like, 'Wow,' and my heart just dropped."
The receipt from All Stars Bar & Grill read "fatty" in the place intended for the customer's name. Arnold shared a photo of the receipt on Facebook and outrage over this incident began to spread on social media.
"[The server] legit ID'ed me as 'fatty,' then he wouldn't admit it. They lost mine and my friends business," the 24-year-old stated in his post.
When Tony Ambrosio, the owner of the restaurant, found out about the incident he was was quick to apologize. And he fired the server in question.
"We sincerely apologize for your negative experience last night. It was very unprofessional to say the least. We take full accountability for what occurred and would like to make it up to you," Ambrosio posted in the comments of Arnold's Facebook photo.
The server turned out to be Ambrosio's son, not only is he out of a job, but he is also no longer allowed on the restaurant's property.

(587 posts)When you are a waiter, you have to identify the tables. You don't go over and ask their names, and while it's stupid to enter a pejorative name on the receipt, wait staff do and say this stuff ALL the time. "Hey the fat woman in the back corner wants extra potatoes - can you double her order plz" and "Hey, busboy, take this plate of ribs to the bald woman near the door".
Sure, it's tactless but it happens. If the guy is that offended by it that he had to go to the news media, he should probably spend more time being offended at the quantity of food he's eating?

(2,125 posts)REstaurants typically number tables. What is so difficult about that?

(587 posts)who ordered what.
As I said, it is offensive when discovered, but obviously such descriptors are not meant to make it to the customers hands.
Who is going to write "the nice gentleman with the well trimmed beard wearing gray khakis and a slim-fit shirt" and "elderly woman with beautiful gray hair and an adorable accent" and "young twenty-something with touseled hair, a hearty laugh and stylish sneakers"? It will be "beard guy" "Old woman" and "fat guy".
It's just the first identifying feature you see upon looking at them that others would notice and be able to identify them with. It's not generally meant as a pejorative.
Oh, and you presume wrong. I struggled with my weight for years and years. I mountain bike and go to the gym regularly, and I am extremely careful about the food I buy and what I eat. I lost over 100lbs and kept it off for years. I sympathize with the guy for being fat, but not for running to the media because he's offended that someone noticed he's fat.

(2,331 posts)Who has the least amount of sympathy for those people who have failed to be as righteous as s/he and still displays that wretched frailty for all the world to see.
And worse, demands to be treated as if that unworthy person was, you know, normal. Instead of being humble and accepting all the insults and scorn heaped on him or her because s/he just hasn't tried hard enough to conform.
Corporate666
(587 posts)that demands the rest of the world accommodate them and insulate them from any notion that they have an issue they need to confront and deal with.
And worse, those that shout down anyone who doesn't offer anything but unconditional sympathy while completely ignoring the very real health and self-esteem issues the actual victim is dealing with.
AndreaCG
(2,331 posts)So you know "fatty"personally then. And are his confidant. Because you seem to be privy to "the very real health and self esteem issues the actual victim is dealing with." Most of the rest of us on the thread don't know "fatty" at all, therefore can't say what his health and self esteem issues, if any, might be.
However, one might make a case that "fatty" actually does have some self esteem, or enough to object to being labeled simply by his girth. Just as a person in a wheelchair might object to a waiter who scribbled on his pad the identifying word "cripple", or better yet, "crip".
As for "fatty's" health, unless you are his doctor, nurse, receptionist, family member or friend, or maybe his trainer at the gym (cause you know, fatties aren't banned from most gyms. Maybe you even went to one before you lost all that nasty yellow flab), you really are only guessing about his health problems. Amiright?
Unless he talked about health problems in the CNN clip or elsewhere. Didn't notice. Didn't notice anyone else bring it up either.

(53,921 posts)How difficult is it to identify the table number? The actual identity of the customer isn't needed when relaying an order. This isn't tactless, it is disgusting, and in some cases, bigoted.
Corporate666
(587 posts)How do you identify them?
Or maybe the tables get moved and shuffled around depending on how busy it is.
How is identifying someone as fat being bigoted? Fat isn't an unpopular opinion. It's eating too many calories and not exercising sufficiently.
Behind the Aegis
(53,921 posts)The bigger question is why the fuck anyone other than the server needs to identify them? If it is the busboy, then tell them location at the table.
"Fat" is a physical descriptor one needn't use. And you're "understanding" of what "fat" is, is sorely lacking.
ETA: "Fatty" is not a descriptor, it is a pejorative!

There are actual methods and ways to do this that are very simple.

Bias often compels us to deny additional existing possibilities, as well as rationalize our ugliness.

It's not hard at all if you just think a little, and maybe care a smidgeon for other people's feelings.

(2,331 posts)But because the RESTAURANT OWNER took the unusual srep of not only firing the offending waiter, who was his own son, but actually BANNED him from the premises. You don't see that happening every day.
As someone with a newspaper journalism degree, that stands out as the reason it would be worthy of a few minutes on a 24/7 cable channel. It comes under the category of a "feel good" story,
Well, all except for the kid whose dad humiliated him on national TV for a damn good reason and now the kid can't even hang out at his usual watering hole to whinge about it, maybe.

(8,646 posts)I've been a waitress and none of us did that. Tables have numbers. And most normal people have hearts and aren't mean. YMMV I guess. I've seen your other posts, so I guess it's not surprising. Wrong turn somewhere I assume.

(1,683 posts)For instance "46W" for a man or "18++" for a woman where size might be a descriptor.
"110=0" for a particularly ugly woman.
"40DD" for a well-endowed woman.
"0ha" for a bald man.
"OFt" for an old guy.

(36,926 posts)When serving a large table, we were taught to give the customers and their orders numbers starting from the same point at the table each time. Customers were automatically identified with their table positions. It was pretty fail proof and we had no need to insult anyone.

(14,915 posts)I'm a fat dude. If this happened to me, I'd probably make sure the server knew I noticed, and his/her tip would reflect the attitude, however I wouldn't try to get my story on CNN or refuse to talk to the owner if he tried to apologize to me.
We are all just a bunch of perpetually offended dopes.

(6,393 posts)People keep not reading the actual story. The reason the story went out is because the restaurant saw the image and it went big because of that.
