Hampton School Board votes against renaming Davis and Lee campuses (VA)

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- In a unanimous vote, Davis Middle School and the Campus at Lee will not be renamed.

The renaming was proposed by Andrew Shannon with the peninsula chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership conference in May.

The schools are named after two Confederate figures, Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee who, in Shannon's opinion, "represented bigotry, hatred and divisiveness."

The school board decided to hear from the community in two public hearings before making a decision ...

Thomas Perry, a student representative, polled classmates and found that the majority of their votes matched popular opinion at the hearings.

Perry's friend told him, "Honestly, I don't think they should change the name, because I like the name of a Confederate leader being the name of a school and having African-American students, teachers, Caucasians, Chinese, Japanese, all learning in that school together."

"He said it was sort of a kick in the face to his legacy, saying this is what that man stood for, the opposite of what's happening here," Perry said.
