Asked of Democratic registered voters
Hillary Clinton (D) 72%
Neither/Other 10%
Donald Trump (R) 10%
Not Voting 5%
Don't know/Refused 3%

Asked of Republican registered voters
Donald Trump (R) 76%
Neither/Other 10%
Hillary Clinton (D) 9%
Don't know/Refused 4%
Not Voting 1%

Asked of independent registered voters
Donald Trump (R) 32%
Neither/Other 27%
Hillary Clinton (D) 27%
Don't know/Refused 7%
Not Voting 7%

Trump's lead over Clinton among Republicans is given as 65 points (76 - 9), while Clinton's lead over Trump among Democrats is given as 62 points (72 - 10). Trump's lead over Clinton among independent voters is given as 5 points (32 - 27). I understand that there may be more Democrats than Republicans; at the same time, the underlying numbers do not, in my opinion, show what I consider to be a strong lead. I imagine that, if the election were held today, it would be very, very close.

There isn't reason to assume this one will be different.

There are more Democrats than Republicans. That point is well known to anyone with any familiarity with party identification in recent years.

That said, tit is far too early for polls to be meaningful. In all likelihood they will tighten by November. That is what has happened in every election in the past couple of decades.

For the week of October 15, 2012 showed Mitt Romney with a seven point lead on Barack Obama. That was only three weeks before the election. Obama won 51-47.
