LGBTQ and Gun Violence-Prevention Groups Call for Hate and Terror to be Disarmed Following Orlando

U.S. government leaders continue to grapple with addressing gun violence-prevention following last weekend’s homophobic massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, LGBTQ and gun violence-prevention advocates and activists are calling for more stringent checks to keep guns out of dangerous hands.

The Orlando tragedy, the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, highlights how vulnerable LGBTQ communities are to hate-fueled violence, especially LGBTQ communities of color.

Hate violence has risen sharply in recent years, with a 20% increase in reported LGBTQ homicides in the U.S. between 2014 and 2015, according to a study released this week by The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP). Of the homicides reported last year, 62% were LGBTQ people of color.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) hate crime statistics tell us year after year that people are most frequently targeted for hate violence based on the personal characteristics related to race, religion, and sexual orientation. According to The Williams Institute, gay men report being victims of violent hate crimes at a higher rate than any other targeted group, and these crimes are more violent and result in hospitalization more often.

On MSNBC yesterday a prominent Stonewall Veteran said, 'Rifles are instruments of hate.'

This gentleman was talking about the weapons used in the Orlando shooting. He was going to skip the Stonewall events this year, but felt compelled to attend because of Orlando.

He was publicly advocating for President Obama to be publicly executed.

Yet, instead of having his guns confiscated for the threat against the President, he was allowed to keep all of his guns and to provide material support for the Orlando shooter.

What does a domestic terrorist need to do to actually have his guns confiscated?

Other posts on his page are filled with rants critical of black lives matters protesters and President Obama.

In November he wrote alongside an image of Obama, “He should be handcuffed, removed from Office and charged with Treason and then publicly executed! How can the American People and military stand by and do nothing while this piece of s--t puts everyone of us in danger.”

Pink Pistols helps Nevada’s LGBT gun owners

By WESLEY JUHL
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Gays with guns don’t get bashed.

That was part of Kimberly Lang’s thought process when she bought her first gun last week.

Lang, 26, and her wife, Naomi Ramirez-Lang, 27, had been talking about firearm ownership for some time, but the Mesquite residents always hesitated. They have two children and anything-can-happen concerns with having a gun in their home.

“I’ve always wanted a gun, and nobody in my family’s really let me have one,” Lang said. “I really want to own one for the safety of my family.”

But then on June 12 a lone gunman entered a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Authorities have said Omar Mateen shot more than 100 people — 49 fatally — during Latin night at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub before he was killed by police.

The tragedy holds the distinction of being the deadliest multiple-victim shooting in recent U.S. history, and it forced the women to reconsider.

“After the shooting I was like, ‘No, I’m doing this,’” Lang said.
