https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2016/06/27/deep-down-california-may-have-a-lot-more-water-than-scientists-thought/In a surprising new study, Stanford researchers have found that drought-ravaged California is sitting on top of a vast and previously unrecognized water resource, in the form of deep groundwater, residing at depths between 1,000 and nearly 10,000 feet below the surface of the states always thirsty Central Valley.
The resource amounts to 2,700 billion tons of freshwater, mostly less than about 3,250 feet deep, according to the paper published Monday in the influential Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. And there is even more fresh or moderately salty water at more extreme depths than this that could potentially be retrieved and desalinized someday for drinking water, or for use in agriculture.
Theres a lot more fresh groundwater in California than people know, said Stanfords Rob Jackson, who conducted the research with the universitys Mary Kang, the studys lead author. Its like a savings account. We can spend it today, or save it for when we really need it .Theres definitely enough extra groundwater to make a difference for the drought and farmers....
And perhaps most troubling of all oil and gas companies, whose data provided the basis for the discovery, may already be despoiling some of this water with their activities, the research suggests.

Donald Trump Tells Drought-Plagued Californians: There Is No Drought
If I win, believe me, were going to start opening up the water.

(38,310 posts)2. That's some expensive water, energy-wise.
Burning fracked gas to power the pumps would be a really stupid thing to do.

I'm sad to admit that Nestle was my very first thought, before I'd even gotten halfway through the first paragraph of the article.
