It will help get conservatives to the polls, but it's going to kill his chances with most indies and any lefties who were thinking of crossing over. It was a bad move from his point of view. If he had picked a social moderate/liberal, he would have had a much better chance.

None of which trump currently polls all that well with. Pence is also Catholic, that may or may not help there
