(111,222 posts)or on the outer banks of NC, either. Likely it will be just wet and windy and not particularly dangerous. However, wet means very, very wet.
Keep your eyes peeled for the one near the Cape Verde Islands, it's lost much of its rain over cooler water, but you can still see the upper level circulation. With luck, it will follow Gaston out to sea but you can't always count on luck.

(34,133 posts)Even though South Florida and the Orlando area will not have any serious weather from this - unless Orlando gets some rain bands - flights could be affected and the news will get many to cancel their plans.
Here in Tallahassee, I'm hunkering down for the weekend. My husband is driving to Atlanta in the morning for DragonCon but he will be in front of the worst of it. I stopped and bought a loaf of bread on the way home today and the grocery was starting to get crazy - bread aisle was almost empty and the stock boys were bringing out bottled water as fast as they could - the carts were emptying before they could get the water on the shelves!
We've got flash flood warnings and tropical storm warnings. Hermine probably won't make it to hurricane strength and if it does, it will be a weak cat 1. With us being much closer to the Georgia line than to the coast, I'm not too worried. We may lose power if a tree goes down, but I can survive a few hours with no electricity.

(268,844 posts)on Saturday evening. We treated it as preparation for a hurricane power cut. You know the worst part - the heat.
csziggy
(34,133 posts)It uses the same 18 volt batteries our hand tools do so we already had those. And it moves an amazing amount of air and makes even hot humidity bearable.
A month or so ago our power went out when a small intense thunderstorm went through with a lot of heavy down drafts. A couple of big trees went down on the lines on the rural highway out to our place. The power was off for almost six hours starting in the middle of the afternoon when it was hottest.
I set that little fan up and it kept it bearable until they got the electricity back on.

(34,133 posts)When we moved into the new house our old battery powered tools gave out during the installation of all the odds and ends. I bought a set of the Ryobi tools which we have added to over the years - circular saw, drill, flash/work light, chain saw, reciprocating saw, weed whacker and the fan.
The original batteries gave up and we've replaced them. So having another device that uses the same batteries works out OK - the next thing I will buy is their lantern that uses the 18 volt batteries but not for this storm.

(268,844 posts)Thanks - I'll check it out.

(60,010 posts)gonna check it out.
We have some great battery powered lights and lots of batteries for them, I did not realize fans were available.
About how long do yours run on a charge??
csziggy
(34,133 posts)The reviews said most of the people got about three hours per battery if I remember correctly. That reminds me - I should switch the batteries on the charger to make sure they are all fully charged!
It's not a problem how long one battery would last, we have about four or five batteries that were acquired with various devices. The fan does NOT come with a battery though, so plan on spending money for a battery and a charger if you don't already have any. Fan was about $40; the last pair of batteries with a new charger we got was about $100.

Hurricane Madeline
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu is tracking Hurricane Madeline, now located about 200 miles east of the Big Island of Hawaii. The powerful storm that was a Category 4 is now packing winds of 90 mph, a Category 1, as it makes its close approach to the Big Island.
The official track predicts the center of Madeline will pass just south of Hawaii, although some models still expect a landfall late Wednesday on the Big Island. Whether the storm makes landfall or not, hurricane-force winds and very heavy rainfall are likely. Therefore, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning for the Big Island, and a tropical storm watch for the islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai. Given the elevated terrain of the islands, the rainfall -- which could total 12 inches -- may cause dangerous mudslides and flash flooding.
Hurricane Lester
Hawaii residents cannot let their guard down after Madeline moves through, however, as Hurricane Lester is fast on its heels. Lester, also a Category 3 storm, is expected to approach the Hawaiian islands this weekend. The forecast currently calls for Lester to miss the islands directly, pushing just to the north, but the entire island chain is still in the forecast "cone of uncertainty."

(111,222 posts)you could see a line of storms across the ocean like a string of pearls, changing names a few times as they went across and turned from hurricanes into typhoons. I vaguely remember posting the wind map showing 4 or 5 of them in a line.

(268,844 posts)We want rain but we don't want floods. Truth is that without storms we'd never get enough water. The problem is that these days the storms are more intense and the systems seem to get bigger.
Are_grits_groceries
(17,111 posts)This has been a pattern for a while. You get weak steering currents and they sit.
The other problem is that this type of rain may not help drought. It runs off too fast and floods down to the oceans. It doesn't saturate the groundwater as much as it needs to.
malaise
(268,844 posts)This system has been around for weeks - stay safe sis

(34,133 posts)We've been getting consistent rain after a couple of wet summers. The lakes and ponds we pass regularly are all pretty full. One road which was getting flooded was closed last year so they could install new drainage pipes to direct water from a perched swamp into the stream that drains the swamp on the other side of the road. Last time I went that way the water in the perched swamp was already up to within 6" of the road level and the swamp on the other side was not any lower.
I expect by Sunday there will be spots with water running over the roads on the way to town. I'm not worried - I'm on a 200' above sea level hill, well away from the ocean and don't have to drive anywhere until next Thursday, if then.
On the other hand, my husband left to go to DragonCon this morning, ahead of the storm. He'll drive back Monday and probably miss the whole thing...

They have a lot of land and a pond, complete with alligators, that tends to overflow. Even though they live inland, looks like they will take quite a hit. I do worry about flooding and tornadoes!
