(24,780 posts)And right after I saw Matthew''s path. Stay safe down there.
According to an update issued by the National Hurricane Center at 11 p.m., Matthew had maximum sustained winds of 160 mph and was located about 440 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica. It was moving west at 7 mph.

(83,730 posts)Jamaicans are accustomed to intense tropical weather but Hurricane Matthew looked particularly threatening. With wind speeds of 160 mph (260 kph), it was more powerful than Hurricane Gilbert, which made landfall on the island in September 1988 and was the most destructive storm in the countrys modern history.
Hurricane Matthew could rival or possibly exceed Gilbert if the core of the strongest winds does actually move over Jamaica, said Dennis Feltgen, a meteorologist and spokesman for the hurricane center in Miami. There is no certainty of that at this point.
Matthew was expected to bring heavy rainfall especially to the eastern tip and higher elevations, which could trigger flooding and landslides, Thompson said.
Forecasters said rainfall totals could reach 10 to 15 inches (25 to 38 centimeters) with isolated maximum amounts of 25 inches (63 centimeters) in Jamaica and southwestern Haiti.

(268,912 posts)yet. Lots of folks won't survive this one particularly those on the coast and those in the mountainside and hills with vulnerable homes. I'm trying to imagine the sea surge into Kingston but hurricanes coming from the South are so rare that we can't process this one.
Ah well - we're as ready as we can be.

(268,912 posts)This will be a long 72 hours - it's raining slightly - lightning and thunder and the real effects won't begin until tomorrow. It's shifted east slightly which is really bad news for Haiti who already face the stronger side of the storm. This too will pass.

(171,056 posts)have the collective attention of so many of us! Let's hope it zings by with minimal damage. I'll be checking in regularly looking for you.

(3,604 posts)I'm sending good vibes your way, for the entire country. Stay safe.
My family has dealt with hurricanes in Hawaii, Iniki demolished my mothers business and she ended up leaving the islands afterwards.
They had a family with a 2 day old baby when the hurricane hit, (the river flooded under the raised stilted house and they had to escape to higher land when they entered the eye of the hurricane)...
.... anyway, because of the stress of it all, the new mother was unable to produce milk. After the hurricane, there were no stores open, no electricity, etc. and they had a hungry baby to deal with. So our bit of advice to new mothers is to stock up on formula, even if you have no plans on using formula. The entire community got together to help this new mom find some subsistence for her baby since she was unable to provide. The community coming together to help each other was uplifting. But it was months and months until services were restored.

(111,241 posts)the strongest winds will be out of the north and Kingston will be spared. The north coast will bear the brunt of the winds but as long as the eye stays east, flooding will be from rain and not a storm surge.
Let's hope the damned thing stays east.

Back down to Cat 4 which is scary enough. Poor Jamaica - this will be an absolute mess with an unbelievable loss of life and property.
Truth is we know the power company will shut down before the storm and who knows when we'll be able to post again because internet connections won't survive this one. We'll survive but the poor and vulnerable will take a beating in terms of loss of life and property. This is a bad one and it's now moving at 7mph.
Rain is 'dewing' now as we say here

I'll be around until we lose our internet connection - probably Monday.
We had a glorious sunset this evening and as the great Stevie Wonder
sang - tomorrow (as in whenever Matthew departs) robins will sing.

Where is Jim Cantore? Ben Kennedy from Miami ABC is here.
Rain and wind will be our problem 10 - 25 inches over nearly three days but think of poor Haiti with 15 - 40 inches - holy shite!!!

(268,912 posts)Haiti and Guantanamo Bay are going to be hit big time. Poor Haiti - she really doesn't need this. Looks like we're going to miss the worst of this although Matthew is one weird hurricane.. My worry is flooding and landslides.
