When we bought our house in 1981, it had a wood split shingle roof as did all the houses in the area where I live. All were built in the early 1960's. By the 1980's the shingles had gotten soft from age and weather. The raccoon's pulled the shingles off the roof and got in our attic. They did the same thing to every house on our street. Needless to say, we had a new asbestos shingle roof put on. Since then, wood shingle roofs are no longer allowed in Dallas, not because of the raccoon's, but because they are a fire hazard.
