At least four cruise ships scheduled to return to Florida over the next two days instead will remain at sea as they steer clear of Hurricane Matthew.
Cruise giant Carnival on Wednesday said the 2,052-passenger Carnival Sensation won't arrive back in its home port of Miami until Friday, a day behind schedule.
Also returning to Miami on Friday, a day behind schedule, will be Royal Caribbean's 1,840-passenger Empress of the Seas, the line announced Wednesday. A second Royal Caribbean ship, the 2,350-passenger Majesty of the Seas, will return to its home port of Port Canaveral, Fla., on Saturday, also a day behind schedule.
Also returning to Port Canaveral on Saturday instead of Friday will be Disney Cruise Line's 2,500-passenger Disney Dream, the line announced Wednesday. Disney has canceled the ship's next voyage, which had been scheduled to start on Friday.

(8,203 posts)Unless, the cruise ships and the airlines are in sync..could that be..I highly doubt it - but then, air traffic, I'm sure, will be interrupted as well...depending on the force of the storm and the inland reach...up and down the east coast..be well ALL..

(1,907 posts)If they booked through the cruise ship company a lot of them have flight guarantees and will pay for new tickets etc. Someone who didn't probably out of luck.

(5,417 posts)Its not too difficult to get a boat out of the way of a hurricane. There is plenty of notice to reroute ship.
Even if you cancel the cruise they are going to keep a few people on board to take it somewhere out of the path of the hurricane.

(58,647 posts)those cruise ships go 30 knots, probably. If one got caught, the captain is an idiot.

Yeah, if I were the captain, I would definitely make sure my ship was elsewhere when the storm hits.

Offering partial refunds or cancellation opportunities, and helping those oboard handle adjusted travel schedules.
I'm a big DCL fan and if the reports continue like this I will have a lot of confidence in booking at this time of year.
Of course I'm in FL and don't have to mess with flights...
