The other nuclear plant in the area is Turkey Point south of Miami and is not affected by the storm.

The earthquake caused the power outage, and the tsunami caused catastrophic flooding which knocked out the backup generators. That was all that was required for the clusterfuck in Fukushima.

That, and some bad decisionmaking, otherwise known as multiple errors.

Now, if Tepco had freaked out appropriately at that point and flooded the reactors with seawater immediately instead of waiting, what, a week, then a lot of trouble could have been avoided. But they didn't want to junk their investment of the reactors, which the seawater would irrevocably do. Of course, by waiting they lost the reactors and a lot more.

I love it when people assume I don't know what I'm talking about. It's fun.

There are five nuclear reactors at three locations in Florida: Progress Energy’s Crystal River plant, 80 miles north of Tampa; Florida Power & Light’s St. Lucie 1 and St. Lucie 2 in Jensen Beach, 10 miles southeast of Ft. Pierce, and FPL’s Turkey Point 3 and Turkey Point 4, just 25 miles south of Miami. The St. Lucie reactors are some 180 miles south of Palm Coast. The Crystal River reactor is 140 miles west of Palm Coast.
