Stranded Families (Brevard): "We're scared. We wish we hadn't stayed."

Brevard County (Cocoa, Cape Canaveral) appears to be getting hit hard.

Stranded Families: "We're scared. We wish we hadn't stayed."
Tampa Bay Times, 10/7/16

Officials say people who refused to evacuate from central Florida's Atlantic coast are calling for help now as Hurricane Matthew's western eyewall brushes past Cape Canaveral.

Brevard County Emergency Operations spokesman David Waters said early Friday that more than 100,000 people in the area had lost power.

Mandatory evacuation orders had been issued for 90,000 people living on barrier islands and in mobile homes and low-lying areas. Waters says some residents who refused to leave now find themselves cut off as they face the worst of the hurricane.

He says a family called in that the roof "just flew off their home on Merritt Island."

It wasn't that bad. Wind and rain. A lot of people without power, but for the most part, less damage than the '04 hurricanes.

ETA - I am mainland. Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, and the other barrier islands were under mandatory evacuation. Barrier islands got the bad shit, the rest of Brevard got skirted with tropical storm winds and rain.

at Florida Tech in Melbourne and moved to an Evac Shelter about noon yesterday. They survived the night and he popped up online this morning all's well. Hopefully his apartment survived the storm, and we wish FL a speedy recovery.

when the rain is coming down more horizontal than vertical. By then it's probably
much too late to change your mind about where you will wait out the storm.
