Stranded Families: "We're scared. We wish we hadn't stayed."
Tampa Bay Times, 10/7/16
Brevard County Emergency Operations spokesman David Waters said early Friday that more than 100,000 people in the area had lost power.
Mandatory evacuation orders had been issued for 90,000 people living on barrier islands and in mobile homes and low-lying areas. Waters says some residents who refused to leave now find themselves cut off as they face the worst of the hurricane.
He says a family called in that the roof "just flew off their home on Merritt Island."

(6,568 posts)It wasn't that bad. Wind and rain. A lot of people without power, but for the most part, less damage than the '04 hurricanes.
ETA - I am mainland. Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, and the other barrier islands were under mandatory evacuation. Barrier islands got the bad shit, the rest of Brevard got skirted with tropical storm winds and rain.

(42,753 posts)when the rain is coming down more horizontal than vertical. By then it's probably
much too late to change your mind about where you will wait out the storm.
