Desert Trip's dream lineup and sky-high prices are making history—and upending rock fest tradition

There’s a good reason many people are calling the Desert Trip music festival “Oldchella”: The average age of the audience is 51; for the headlining acts, it’s 72.

But if the punchline for the multi-weekend event featuring performances by half a dozen rock titans, including the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney, involves sensible shoes and Viagra, the bottom line is even more complicated: An event aimed specifically at the commune-embracing “Steal this Book” generation will be the most lucrative music festival on record.

For many attendees, it will also be the most expensive, pointing to the evolution of the once-egalitarian ethos of rock and quite possibly a revolution in the price, shape and content of music festivals in the future.

Desert Trip, which kicks off Friday, is slated to take in $160 million over two consecutive weekends. That’s almost double the previous record of $84 million by the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival last year (both are promoted by Los Angeles-based Goldenvoice and take place on the same grounds in Indio).

They took advantage of the coverage when this was announced, and charged some pretty outrageous prices. People crashed the ticket system, not being able to miss a chance at spending $400 for the cheapest GA ticket.

Tickets are now selling on the secondary market for 1/2 that price. The promoters even flooded the public with a large ticket release a couple of weeks back. I'm sure there were plenty of brokers or wanna be ticket brokers, who took a bath on these.

that their fans are on social security and just might not be able to make the walk from the parking lot to the venue. Looks like they're playing us for suckers and I hope it's a bust. You guys have enough money!

Sure they can, and they can kick your whippersnapper ass the entire way, dragging an O2 bottle or not!

I've seen some silly assed posts in my time on this board, and this one ranks right up there.

I have children your age. These guys are over the hill and just trying to milk more money out of fans. Love to listen to their old hits, but love new entertainers too. Rather spend my money on and listen to the up and comers. They might need the money more. You gotta keep up and move forward!

Heading over to the festivities soon.

Rumor has it a mystery musician well appear tonight. Not sure with Bob or the Rolling Stones. I hope it's Eric Clapton!
