Trump attacked an 81 year old woman's appearance

The actress Kim Novak, a megastar of 1950s cinema, was a near-recluse when friends urged her to take a chance and appear at the Academy Awards last year.

Sitting at home, Donald J. Trump spotted Ms. Novak, then 81, on his television screen and recoiled at her appearance. He tapped out a message on Twitter.

“I’m having a real hard time watching,” Mr. Trump wrote. “Kim should sue her plastic surgeon!”

To Ms. Novak, who read the message after the show, it was a devastating setback in her return to public life: She retreated to Oregon, fell into what she called “a tailspin” and refused to leave her house for days. In an open letter to her fans a few weeks later, Ms. Novak denounced Mr. Trump’s tweet as bullying.

2. Trump's tweets remind me a bit of something that was popular

when I was in about 9th grade, back in the early '60s. It was called a slam book, and it was a spiral notebook that got passed around, and kids (often the mean girls) would write comments in it. A page would have a question about something or somebody and you could add your answer to the question - most of the time it was something gossipy or mean. It could be really awful to be on the receiving end of a slam book comment. Trump is just sending around an electronic slam book - and it figures, since I think his development got arrested in middle school.

Kim Novak did look pretty awful. But it was not kind of Trump to tweet about it.

Meg Ryan looks pretty awful from the plastic surgery she's had.

Even the actresses who have appeared to have aged gracefully-- Susan Sarandon, Helen Mirren, Jane Fonda--either have admitted to or are suspected
of having minor plastic surgery.

So far, the most acclaimed actress of our time--Meryl Streep--has not given in to plastic surgery. But the pressure is there for women. And people like
Trump are responsible for promoting that culture.
