I haven't watched the film in many years, and I know it was groundbreaking when it was released in 1992. I am watching it on epix right now. It is a mockumentary of a conservative Wall Street millionaire folk singing "rebel" who is running for the senate. Every single slogan used by the Bob Roberts campaign is the SAME as crap put out by Trump and his minions, including dumb statements about being a winner, losing is for poor people, the media is satanic, God hates liberals, make America great again, etc etc. Of course some of it is just making fun of conservative platitudes, but seriously watching it now in light of the Trump campaign is positively uncanny. Tim Robbins is great as Bob Roberts, and so is the much missed Alan Rickman in his role as the shadowy campaign manager. Roberts is called a "master of pushing racist and sexist buttons"
(Paraphrase of one of his arguments): "Why don't you have a mansion? Why don't you have that fast sports car? Because of social programs that waste money on ungrateful looosers..."

(11,006 posts)Some of it is a bit over-the-top in its characterizations of the right wing, especially with the folk songs, but not too much.
